POSITION DESCRIPTION:

UTS is about to embark on a Capital Campaign as well as expanded educational and community initiatives, and is looking for a gifted communicator and a tech savvy story teller to join the UTS Office of Advancement. 

Under the direction of the Executive Director, Advancement, the incumbent is responsible for developing and supporting a communications strategy and for creating high quality and impactful design and communications across a range of platforms, to advance the UTS mission.  Duties include developing a strategic communications plan for Advancement-oriented publicity and communications to advance the school’s relationships with its alumni and parent community. This involves creating, writing and designing original collateral materials, managing the publication and content development of Parent Updates and The Root magazine, and coordinating the school’s website and social media feeds. The incumbent will take on special communications projects including developing creative material (visual and written) as directed by the Executive Director.  Other duties include assisting in balancing the completion of complex assignments as well as the handling of more routine daily matters, assuming responsibility for overseeing and coordinating all aspects of assigned communications projects.

The incumbent will work in close collaboration with the Marketing Communications Coordinator (MCC) and, as a member of the UTS Advancement team, with all UTS constituents to achieve objectives.  Therefore, the incumbent must exercise a high level of initiative, autonomy and creative independence on many projects and requires an excellent grasp of communications strategy and processes and an understanding of the breadth of responsibilities handled by the Executive Director as well as the communications objectives of the department and the school.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:       Bachelor’s degree, preferably in marketing communications with a focus on branding, graphic design, website design and development of original copy.

Experience:      

  • Three (3) years related communications/design experience, preferably in a not-for-profit/educational environment, with some exposure to fundraising/advancement communications needs. 
  • Web-based content development and maintenance experience is essential. 
  • Must be well-versed in graphic design and print specifications, and have relevant experience as a writer for print and electronic publications in an educational environment, as well as social media trends and applications
  • Project management experience in web, print production and experience working with suppliers is essential. Knowledge of independent school environment and fundraising databases (e.g. Raiser’s Edge) would be an asset.

Skills & Knowledge Base:

  • Knowledge of Windows Office Suite (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint), Google tools, Adobe Creative Suite, web content management.
  • Proven project management, time management and organizational skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills; able to take initiative and be assertive in completing tasks;
  • Demonstrated multi-tasking skills and ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines with interruptions; willingness to upgrade skills as needed;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; superior public relations skills; good judgment; accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Knowledge of intellectual property rights and consent issues, especially as relating to minors.
