Summary: The Instructional Technology Specialist works independently, proactively, and in consultation with faculty in the Departments of Health and Exercise Science, French Studies, and Spanish and Italian, and other members of the Instructional Technology Group on the use and implementation of information technology in instruction and scholarship. Keeps abreast of emerging instructional technologies, particularly those related to the relevant disciplines. Collaborates with the Teaching and Learning Collaborative and the Office of Online Learning to support faculty in technology-enhanced instruction. Identifies technology issues and works together with the Information Systems Service Desk to resolve technology issues and provide services, such as standard software and hardware support. Serves as departmental point of contact for technology planning, budgeting, purchasing, and administration of computing resources. This position also assists in website development and maintenance.

Essential Functions:

  • Works with faculty, staff, and students on department and discipline-specific projects, including identification, installation and support of hardware or software.
  • Provides support for university client hardware, including connections to approved peripherals.
  • Supports university standard software. Supports and addresses advanced and discipline-specific issues and software.
  • Provides classroom instruction of standard load techniques/applications to students, as directed.
  • Maintains department web site frameworks and consults on designs.
  • Works with Information Systems to troubleshoot multimedia equipment in classroom spaces.
  • Works with Information Systems to troubleshoot networking in academic buildings.
  • Provides assistance with backup, as requested.
  • Works in partnership with other instructional technologists providing cover for each other when taking PTO and assisting with specialized knowledge.
  • Initiates specification, purchase, and deployment of appropriate technology items to support teaching and research, as directed.
  • Assists on issues associated with migration of data from one computer to another.
  • Coordinates delivery and retrieval of department equipment to and from the IS Service Desk, as directed.
  • Advises and supports course evaluation technology (i.e. delivery & reporting).
  • Manages Departmental shared file space.

Other Functions:

  • Occasional work outside normal business hours, to help with emergencies or special events.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent plus at least three years of related experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of the standard hardware and software used at Wake Forest University and the ability to provide technical support and basic troubleshooting.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic computer networking.
  • Knowledge of HTML and web packages and the ability to develop and maintain web sites.
  • Ability to research and evaluate discipline specific hardware and software for departmental instruction and research. Ability to train and willingness to participate in cross-campus training, problem solving, and committees.
  • Willingness and ability to scope and sequence projects and ability to manage those projects.
  • Extensive experience with Windows or OSX operating systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Master’s degree in a related area.
  • Knowledge of Wordpress and/or MySQL or PHP.
  • Knowledge of survey tools (i.e. Qualtrics).
  • Familiarity with video and audio editing.
  • Knowledge of instructional design.
  • Knowledge of technology that supports foreign language instruction.
