General Description

Reporting into the Dean of Flexible Learning Options & Academic Technology (FLOAT), the Academic Technology Specialist assists the Dean in the design, development and modification of multimedia/instructional material, training workshops and instructional design support for on-campus course delivery. As a core member of the FLOAT team, the Academic Technology Specialist is responsible for researching innovative technologies and collaborating with faculty to integrate technology into appropriate instructional activities. This position provides technical support for the College’s learning technologies, while collaborating with the ITS division concerning software needs to enhance instruction.

Specific Responsibilities

• Define instructional, learning, and performance objectives to address educational challenges at the College.

• Provide consultation to academic department heads and faculty to advise and assess departmental needs and develop plans for technology acquisition, training, and curricular integration.

• Design and facilitate professional development programs and orientations designed for both faculty and staff on technology related areas as well as specialized topics in response to specific requests.

• Provide outreach and advocacy for the effective usage of technology within the classrooms; collaborating with other departments when needed.

• Provide technical support of learning technologies for the College’s onsite and online learning programs for optimal use of video/web conferencing/lecture capture and specialized software (e.g. Autocad, forensics software, etc.), while ensuring compliance with ADA requirements.

• Develop training modules, including videos and other resources for faculty use.

• Consult with external constituents, such as vendors, remote guest lectures, on initiatives and projects that involve instructional technology.

• Implement instructional design plans and provide technology advice on course and curriculum development projects.

• In collaboration with ITS and Marketing, develop communication plans that ensure optimum outreach, including social media.

• Research and evaluate emerging instructional technologies or methods.

• Assist in the collection of budget documents to support the acquisition, installation, and retirement of instructional hardware and software to support academic programs and specific initiatives.

• Collaborate with other internal departments (e.g. Multimedia Services, Academic & Student Success, Facilities, etc.) to advance the use of innovative technology in learning spaces.

• Assist in the design and development of faculty and course web pages.

• Provide guidance to ITS for software needs from academic departments in the building of software master images to enhance instruction in the Student Technology Classroom (STC) learning spaces.

• May be required to attend special events which require technical support.

• Ability to deliver quality customer services to both internal and external constituents in a professional, helpful and courteous manner.

• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or technological area is required. Any and all degree(s) must be from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

• A minimum of two years of related work experience required.

• Previous experience in the instructional integration of information technology required.

• Demonstrated understanding of hardware and software installation and troubleshooting in a desktop computing environment required.

• Previous experience in the development and delivery of technological training required.

• Must be results oriented individual with high attention to detail required.

• Excellent analytical and problem solving skills to address work-related issues and problems.

• Ability to multi-task and communicate effectively required.

• Demonstrated commitment to customer service and ability to collaborate well with others required.

• Demonstrated ability to analyze, design, test, implement and document complex solutions for assigned clients and/or systems required.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.

• Strong time management and organizational skills required.

• Demonstrated ability to work independently or as a team member required.

• Ability to maintain sensitivity, understanding and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, and ethnic backgrounds required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.

• Recent teaching experience in higher education preferred.
