THE POSITION
Hawken School seeks an individual to join the Makerspace team and teach Design and Architecture courses using a studio approach to maker-centered learning. Hawken Makerspace resources include our digital Fabrication Lab (Fab Lab), Media Lab and woodshop. The Fab Lab on the Gates Mills Campus (9-12) is an open resource to all students and families looking to design, invent, and create using a variety of tools including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC milling machines, a vinyl cutter, 2D and 3D design software, an electronics bench, programing, and traditional hand tools and power tools.  
 
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Teach four classes focused on art and design fundamentals, architecture, engineering and prototyping that support the goals of the Makerspace and Visual Arts teams
  • Supervise and support the management of the Makerspaces during the academic day and after school
  • Design new courses for Hawken’s unique intensive program in which students take just one class for three weeks and support existing courses and teacher collaboration
  • Mentor students with strong interest in architecture, industrial and product design, and prototyping
  • Serve as a resource for exploration and implementation of creative ideas while enhancing collaborative opportunities among teachers in all content areas
  • Foster innovation in colleagues, supporting them in using equipment in our Fab Lab
  • Join enthusiastically in the effort to develop an innovative design culture among faculty
  • Work closely with our Director of Maker Spaces and administrators  responsible for guiding curricular development incorporating design across disciplines
  • Participate and support school recruiting events, family workshops, and professional development
  • Advise 10-12 students
  • Actively engage in school life and other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS  
Bachelor’s degree required in fields that support architecture, art or engineering. Advanced degree in Architecture preferred. Candidates with teaching experience and additional expertise in some area of the Visual Arts and Design are preferred.
  • Familiarity with the design studio model of learning
  • Experience using 2D and 3D design software and technology to support arts foundations and exercise digital fabrication techniques (CNC mill, 3D Printer, Laser Cutter, CAD, CAM)
  • Strong leader with progressive vision and enthusiasm for developing new courses
  • Enthusiasm for applying progressive pedagogies and technology to best practices in the classroom
  • Authentic listener and bridge builder who will help teachers collaborate even more closely on curriculum as we iterate to excellence
  • Previous job or hobbyist experience with “Maker” or “DIY” projects utilizing skills such as prototyping, woodworking, sculpture, industrial design, or coding
  • Knowledge or experience within  STEM related fields that can connect students to real-world projects
  • Eagerness to participate in curricular initiatives that includes interdisciplinary approaches, multicultural perspectives, and experiential opportunities both in and out of the classroom
  • A desire and willingness to try new approaches, embracing a growth mindset for yourself and for students
  • Passion for designing unique programing and curricula with colleagues in your field and across disciplines
  • Ability to engage students with a range of learning styles
  • A deep understanding of adolescence and a passion for working with teens as they face the complex issues of today’s world
  • Flexibility, energy, and a commitment to working actively with students both individually and in groups
