The Assistant Director, Data Center Operations leads, directs and has oversight of the groups responsible for Cornell Information Technologies (CIT) Data Centers (includes telecom & switch rooms), Systems Administration and Production Control. The Assistant Director will be responsible for developing standards and controls for each discipline to meet day to day production operations support. Development and delivery of these services entail broad based coordination and collaboration with other units of CIT, local units’ IT support providers, Facilities and Campus Service, and the entire campus community. 

As the manager, the Assistant Director is the primary spokesperson for these services and acts as technical advisor on major projects. The Assistant Director will be responsible for assisting other Infrastructure Service Owners in developing and maintaining strategic relationships with key vendors and VARs, e.g. IBM, HP, Fortinet, Syratec, NYSERNET, Juniper, Cogent, Mainline, Sirius, and FirstLight, and with Cornell constituencies. He/she will champion the Account/Vendor and Business management functions to support other Service Owners in managing invoice processing, validation & tracking, participate in hardware and software life cycle management, maintaining maintenance records for hardware & software assets, track purchases and record warranty maintenance expirations, process purchase requests, track & maintain contract renewals, maintain e-Builder for PARs and Infrastructure Accounts, budget forecasting both for yearly operations budget forecasting and assist in the Infrastructure Capital Budget.

He/she will be an active participant with the senior management of Infrastructure and CIT in setting strategic and organizational directions.

 

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with at least 7 to 10 years’ experience in a complex and dynamic environment in a management capacity, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • Must possess and be able to integrate knowledge that cuts across several fields within the IT spectrum (such as systems management, application development, network management, storage strategies), as well as general information technology issues. Requires a high level of technical literacy with a focus on operations support.

  • Substantial knowledge of Account and Business Management either through formal or informal training.

  • The individual must have well-developed communications and management skills, and be articulate in written and oral presentations.

Preferred:

  • Experience in managing departmental budgets, developing vendor relationships and negotiating for major acquisitions of equipment and services is highly desirable. 

  • Solid understanding of project management concepts and practices preferred. 

  • Knowledge of high availability technology, backup technology, server management tools, and/or disaster recovery principles desired.
