The Yale Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) seeks an Assistant Director of Educational Technologist who will bring excitement and energy to advanced level support for Yale’s Learning Management Systems (Canvas), as well as act as a catalyst for helping a great university evolve their relationship to teaching and learning.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Educational Technology, the Assistant Director will provide support and collaborate with faculty to accomplish teaching and learning objectives with appropriate technology, while bringing a consultative approach to applying technological solutions to teaching and learning. Your focus will be on teaching and learning in our Learning Management Systems (LMS) and associated external applications that extend the core functionality of the LMS. Responsibilities also include authoring and regularly publishing service and support news and updates, one on one consulting, designing and hosting workshops, and establishing relationships with faculty to participate in a continuous dialog around growing teaching and learning objectives.

In addition, this position will:

  • Provide direct support to teaching staff and students using technology for teaching and learning; includes email, phone, and in person support, and occasional in classroom support.

  • Responding in a timely manner to requests for assistance and troubleshooting problems for our supported services.

  • Participate in the development of support documentation and models, identification of training needs, and [planning and delivery of] workshops.

  • Thoroughly understand and support all core functionality and integrated service components with the LMS, including research and partner to evaluate, prioritize, test, and integrate enhancements requests based on feedback.

  • Communicate regularly, including through social media, with Yale community around information and events of interest, including information from beyond Yale, software changes, service changes or enhancements, and training.

  • You will help faculty make effective use of Yale’s vast resources, technology and otherwise, by developing and maintaining a strong understanding of instructional support and other services, including across Yale College and Yale’s graduate and professional schools, Yale University Library, and the Information Technology Services Help Desk.

  • Share educational technology techniques and best practices with colleagues and clients, within and beyond the University. Explore and adopt best practices from other schools and institutions and “market” academic technology services and projects at fairs and other campus events.

  • Participate in Consulting and Course Support services.

  • Deliver technical expertise and provide recommendation in researching, evaluating and implementing new instructional technologies.

  • Maintain understanding of current Instructional Technology trends.

  • Manage educational technology projects as assigned. Work with project teams to establish project deliverables and track progress. Keep faculty and colleagues informed of project status and accomplishments.

  • Manage and mentor staff and student workers as required.

  • Some schedule flexibility required at certain times of year (e.g. weekend support coverage, occasional evening workshops), as well as other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties

1. Acts as a project leader for Instructional Technology projects. 2. Provides consultation and makes recommendations for allocation of resources, product selection, and priorities. 3. Delivers technical expertise and provides recommendation in researching, evaluating and implementing new instructional technologies. 4. Provides high-level service for existing instructional technologies and projects, as well as high-end support for all instructional technology systems and other multimedia activities. 5. Manages operating systems, applications, web services, and content on the department’s servers. 6. Maintains in depth knowledge of existing and emerging instructional technologies. 7. Develops and reports on metrics that measure usage, reliability and client satisfaction for all technology services provided. 8. Manages relationships with internal and external clients, outside vendors, consultants and peer institutions. 9. Maintains highest possible degree of service and responsiveness in complex, multi-vendor, multiplatform environment. 10. Consults with faculty to assess instructional technology needs. Develops and implements solutions to meet those needs. 11. Provides training on the usage of instructional technologies, and other software and hardware. 12. Manages assigned project tasks to ensure timely and high quality outcomes. Provides regular status reports on assigned projects. 13. Supervises temporary and student workers. 14. May perform others duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree and at least three years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated support of academic technologies required in a university setting, including the support of faculty and students in the use of an LMS (Canvas, Sakai, Blackboard, Moodle, D2L, etc.).

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Masters in Instructional Technology, Instructional Design, or related field; at least 5 years related work experience in higher education.
