Reporting to the Head Librarian, the Assistant Librarian and Media Specialist will assist in carrying out the day-to-day operations of the Oaks Christian School (HS) Library. As the central hub of collaboration and learning within the high school, the library is vital to the continued growth and mission of the school. In alignment with the OCS Portrait of a Graduate, staff within the library work towards the development of knowledge, wisdom, leadership, character, well-being, and community within each OCS student. Staff within the library extend a culture of care that is a hallmark of Oaks and so conducive to learning and growth.   

 

DUTIES & TECHNOLOGY PROFICIENCY:

  • Empower students to be discerning researchers; critical thinkers; curious learners; and collaborative innovators  
  • Assist in developing and coordinating a continuing evaluation of the library state-of-the art media program
  • Collaborate with teachers, department chairs, and administrators in defining the scope and sequence of the information skills curriculum and integrate it into the overall OCS curriculum 
  • Research current and cutting-edge practices associated with healthy, vibrant, 21st century high school and collegiate libraries while attending workshops and conferences as needed 
  • Help maintain a library culture that is welcoming of students, faculty, staff, parents and visitors; the culture should be vibrant, dynamic, current, and conducive to 21st century learning
  • Encourage students in the library and atrium to use their time wisely and efficiently; to remain respectful and courteous towards other students; and to be involved in academic conversation taking place in and around the library 
  • Assist in instructing students to access and use print and electronic resources with the purpose of effective research
  • Assist students with computer and printing needs in the library and how to cite and format documents properly in MLA or Chicago Style     
  • Maintain accurate records towards the successful circulation of books, textbooks, periodicals, and electronic devices 
  • Monitor/schedule library computer lab and atrium in Outlook daily
  • Work with Parent Volunteers, guiding them on assigned tasks
  • Catalogue and process new and/or donated books and other media
  • Develop and implement displays and monthly themes to promote use and exposure of various literature genres and resources
  • Post pertinent and current information on bulletin board, within the school newsletter, and through various other electronic means (as approved by school leadership)

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:  

  • Working knowledge of 21st century library methods and procedures
  • Ability to operate library machines properly
  • Ability to communicate effectively 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Completion of a B.A or B.S Degree and one (1) year of previous library experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities  
  • Master of Library Information Science (MLIS) preferred 
  • Must be willing to work between the hours of 7:30 am and 5:30 pm based on school needs
  • Must be good with young adults  
  • School experience preferred
