Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Dean of Students Office at Iowa State University is seeking applicants for a newly created Assistive Technology Program Assistant to serve as a member of the Student Accessibility Services (SAS) Sensory Disability Services team providing reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the development and delivery of processes and accommodations that promote equitable access for ISU students with hearing impairment and/or other conditions. This includes, but is not limited to, the coordination and implementation of captioning services (live and remote) for students; collaboration with classroom IT services in the management of audio systems; facilitating access to room audio content through access to digital media, lecture notes/note taking, presentation slides, etc. The Assistive Technology Assistant will also teach students about these processes as well as text conversion services and use of related assistive technology (ie. text-to-speech software, speech-to-text software, etc.).

The Assistive Technology Assistant will demonstrate proficiency with a variety of classroom technologies (Canvas LMS, PowerPoint and/or digital classroom media, e-mail and other communication systems, FM audio systems, video conferencing, etc.), possess the ability to resolve both hardware and software concerns, and collaborate with faculty and other stakeholders to assist students. The successful candidate will also possess strong time management, interpersonal, and organizational skills and be able to effectively resolve student access concerns with a high level of autonomy. The successful candidate will be able to work in a constantly changing, fast-paced, high service demand environment and manage multiple competing priorities while prioritizing exceptional customer service.

This is a 10 month, renewable term position: August 1 – May 31. Summer employment and annual renewal of the term will be determined based on the enrollment of students eligible for accommodations supported by assistive technologies.

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience; OR a combination of education and/or related experience totaling 5 years unless otherwise specified under supplemental required education and experience. Experience must be at a comparable level and directly related to the duties of this position.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Experience which demonstrates proficiency using various classroom and office technologies (Canvas LMS, PowerPoint and/or digital classroom media, e-mail and other communication systems, FM audio systems, video conferencing, etc.).

  • Experience which demonstrates proficiency assessing and resolving both hardware and software concerns related to assistive technologies for individuals with disabilities.

  • Experience which demonstrates strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; and the capacity to maintain confidential student information when collaborating with faculty and other stakeholders in accordance with FERPA.

  • Experience which demonstrates time management and organizational skills to effectively manage multiple competing priorities with a high level of autonomy.

  • Experience providing exceptional and inclusive customer service in a constantly changing, fast-paced environment.

 

Additional Information:

This 1-year renewable term position is contingent upon student enrollment creating demand for these services.
