This position manages the operations units of the UW-Shared Services Information Technology (USS-IT) organization (currently referred to as UW Colleges and UW-Extension Central Information Technology Services (CITS)).  The Associate Director, Shared Services Information Technology Services & Deputy CIO (Legal Title: Associate Director, Unspecified (10)) is a senior leadership role within USS-IT and has a significant role in defining and evolving the USS-IT organization to meet the technology services, administrative and academic needs of the USS-IT customer base. The position reports to the Director, Shared Services Information Technology Services & CIO.

 

The Associate Director, Shared Services Information Technology Services & Deputy CIO has responsibility for managing and leading all operations staff within USS-IT and for promoting relationships throughout the UW System.  This position, along with other organization managers, will promote an ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) framework and play a key role in the continued improvement of ITIL processes.

Hours between 7:30 am – 6:00 pm Monday through Friday, as assigned. Some mandatory after hours support will be necessary based on operational needs.

Supervision and Leadership

In collaboration with the UW System and USS CIO, assist in the creation and implementation of the IT strategy for UW System.

Supervise, mentor and develop staff.

Develop the USS-IT staff’s business acumen to enhance their ability to understand and relate to the business challenges of UW System campuses and UW System Administration. 

 

 

A4                 

Conduct skills assessment, recommend training, promote cross team collaboration, assess and assign roles and responsibilities.

 

 

A5                 

Conduct regular unit and individual meetings and foster a team atmosphere within and between organizations and institutions.

 

 

A6                 

Lead the USS-IT operations team in the development and implementation of results driven operational plans that support the IT strategy.

 

 

A7                 

Review current practices throughout the organization and champion results driven process improvements.

 

 

A8                 

Motivate team members, maximizing their individual and team contribution and professional growth.

Prepare annual performance reviews, manage disciplinary issues, and participate in hiring and disciplinary procedures.

Participate in meetings on behalf of the Chief Information Officer and represent the organization as required.

Keep the Chief Information Officer appraised on initiatives, prepare and present recommendations, and provide proposals and reports as required.

Manage the UW-Shared Services Information Technology (USS-IT) Operations Units

 

 

B1                  

Implement, maintain, and document a project management methodology for the organization, including training of all organization staff on its usage.

 

 

B2                  

Oversee the daily operations of the USS-IT organization, ensuring they are designed to expeditiously resolve issues and achieve positive results.

 

 

B3                  

Establish and maintain standard policies of service execution for the organization.  Ensure reported incidents are responded to within customer acceptable time periods and that work is prioritized to ensure clarity among staff.

 

 

B4                  

Conduct follow-up interviews with customers to ensure satisfaction with service levels and communicate customer satisfaction issues within the team to promote service level improvements.

 

 

B5                  

Ensure the teams stay up to date with new technology and development practices.

 

 

B6                  

Support the USS-IT Chief Technology Officer regarding the research and use of emerging technologies.  Assist with investigating and evaluating new service management and project management tools, methodologies and concepts.

 

 

B7                  

Promote effective communications, service delivery and support for all UW technology systems.

 

 

B8                  

Ensure all systems are documented, service dependencies are defined, procedures are developed, and the team is cross-trained in technologies to provide depth in development and service delivery.

 

 

B9                  

Continually evaluate current practices to ensure service success and customer satisfaction.

 

 

B10              

Understand Business Analyst methodologies and practices.  Instill excellent business requirements gathering techniques within the team.

Conduct reviews of USS-IT practices to ensure best practice integration, and adherence to standards.

Review user requests and evaluate the impact of requests on other existing projects, infrastructure and/or overall institutional information technology resources.

Develop, maintain, and manage service level agreements with customers.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, business or related field, professional experience or combination of education, experience and certifications to effectively execute duties upon hire.

  • Minimum of 7 years of direct supervisory experience of IT management and technical staff.

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience managing a 24x7x365 IT organization or team.

  •  Experienced in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with customers.

  • Experienced in system analysis and design, application development technologies/methodologies, and the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)

  • Knowledgeable in PeopleSoft Student Information Systems or ERP implementation, integration, development and support.

  • Experienced in methodologies and techniques for business modeling, requirements gathering, analysis, design, testing, and implementation of information systems.

  • Experienced in application delivery technologies including portals, Internet, client/server.

  • Knowledge of enterprise-wide architectures, Information Technology services, web-based security.

  • Knowledge of cost benefit analysis and feasibility study techniques.

  • Knowledge of team building and collaboration strategies.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, meeting leadership and facilitation, and formal presentation skills.

  • Direct experience negotiating contracts and agreements.

  • Experience with using a best practice framework (ITIL or COBIT).

 

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of database driven applications.

  • Experience with:

    • Programming Languages:  Microsoft .Net, C/C++, C#, Java, HTML, Perl, SQL, XML, VB

    • Application Technologies:  IIS, ColdFusion, SQL Server, Oracle, Windows platforms

    • Infrastructure Technologies: Commvault, Cisco UCS, VMware, Dell servers, APC UPS, Cisco NGFW, HP network switches, Zerto

  • Knowledge of cloud migration strategies, processes and projects.

  • Experience working in higher education preferred.
