Job Summary

The Associate Director, Network reports to the Chief Technology Officer and is responsible for providing strategic and tactical leadership for the University of Utah enterprise network and its ongoing sustainable operations, which supports the academic, research and healthcare missions of the University. The Associate Director is responsible for managing relationships with key technology vendors and suppliers, internal and external business partners, senior IT management and key stakeholders to ensure strategic goals are met. The Associate Director will work within the campus IT governance processes to ensure projects and initiatives align with campus priorities. The Associate Director is responsible for fostering relationships and working with college and departmental IT professionals to understand the needs of the campus community. The Associate Director will work with IT professionals across campus to establish a common network architecture and configuration, and to work towards unified network operations. The Associate Director will provide management oversight for the network team including engineering and operations. The Associate Director is responsible for developing and managing capital and operating budgets and ensuring that budgets align with strategic and institutional priorities. The Associate Director works closely with the IT finance team on revenue and cost tracking and reconciliation. The Associate Director works closely with the Information Securtity Office to ensure that our network architecture, technology, processes and controls conform with security best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related computer science area, or equivalency required; plus six years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills also required.

  • Experience aligning costs and on-going revenue to meet business objectives

  • Skilled in developing technology and product roadmaps for products/services

  • Thorough understanding of service management disciplines and processes

  • Excellent knowledge of change management principles

  • Strong background in effective performance evaluation for teams and individuals

  • Experience with academic, research and healthcare IT

  • Experience in developing a network strategic plan and successful execution of the plan

  • Solid understanding of overall network design and architecture

  • Experience with structured cabling and the importance of Layer 1 in an enterprise network.

  • Experience managing 3rd party vendors

  • Strong communication skills and ability to communicate at all levels of an organization

  • Excellent skills in concensus building

  • Experience with software defined networking

  • Experience with networking in a hybrid and multi-cloud environment

  • Experience designing and implementing network solutions to support IoT

  • Strong experience with network security and related technologies

  • Proven track record as a thought leader with providing network architectures, technologies and services to meet diverse business requirements
