Responsibilities

Northeastern University (www.northeastern.edu) seeks a highly motivated leader with exceptional strategic, operational, entrepreneurial, and interpersonal skills and deep expertise in enterprise communication, faculty engagement, and support to join the leadership team of the University’s Office of the CIO as the AVP and Chief Technology Officer (CTO).

This newly created role reports directly to the Vice President for Information Technology and CIO and will be a key member of the IT Services senior leadership team. The AVP/CTO will play a key role in advancing objectives and in delivering the value of a more strategic approach to innovation and operation of technical infrastructures across the enterprise, including the management of the department supporting infrastructure delivery, voice and data communications, system administration, the creation of the Cloud Center of Excellence, data centers, and the overall information architecture for NU’s long-term investment in infrastructure.

The AVP/CTO will be a seasoned leader with knowledge of best practices in managing large enterprise infrastructure environments. The AVP/CTO will demonstrate the ability to lead and support change across a large, distributed IT organization. This position uses technical knowledge to inform and collaboratively build consensus concerning technology direction and implementation for the enterprise.

The AVP/CTO will be asked to work alongside the CIO to construct a long-term strategic plan to advance Unified Communications and research readiness of NU’s network. Additionally, the AVP/CTO will lead the creation of the envisioned NU Cloud Center of Excellence that will enhance the use of cloud services in the support of teaching, learning, research, and administration.

NU is a global campus, with campus locations across the United States and internationally. It is of critical importance that the AVP/CTO understand the distinct needs of these various campus locations and works to deliver a seamless experience for all locations.

The AVP/CTO will be a key member of the VP for IT and CIO’s executive team and will provide critical insight into the overall operations of the organization. In many cases the AVP/CTO will represent the Office of the CIO in campus wide committees and working groups. Finally, the AVP/CTO will establish trusted relationships across IT Services.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and ten (10) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. A Master’s degree or higher at least fifteen (15) years of experience with ten (10) of those years in an IT leadership role is strongly preferred.

The successful candidate should have an understanding of the decision-making process and structure of a large, complex educational institution, like Northeastern University, and be able to collaboratively build a community with key stakeholders and business unit leaders across the enterprise to reach consensus and positively increase IT’s impact to the academic, research, and economic development mission of the university. Additionally, the successful candidate should have deep technical skills in one or more of the technical domains supervised while also possessing the leadership, communication, and planning skills that allows him/her to develop strong interpersonal relationships across the university.

Other Preferred Qualifications:

  • 15 years of related experience with 10 of those years in an IT leadership role

  • Experience directly managing budgets of over $10M

  • Experience leading an organization of 25 or more people

  • Strong data analysis skills and ability to identify process problems and correct them through policy, procedures and software checking.

  • Master’s degree in business/management, computer science, or engineering.

  • Strong program-development skills in order to develop innovative services and tools.

  • An established record of accomplishments demonstrated by collaborative engagement with campus constituents in an academic environment.

  • Highly developed written, oral, listening and presentation skills.

  • Excellent customer service skills as demonstrated by the ability to work directly with constituents and vendors to understand and resolve function and/or technical issues to deliver an exceptional customer experience.

  • Experience leading complex discussions by seeking input, identifying obstacles, being transparent, and driving to results.

  • Demonstrated understanding of a cloud strategy for infrastructure.
