The Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Worcester Academy is the senior administrator responsible for information systems, technologies and services. This includes academic and administrative computing, instructional technology services, telecommunications and Internet services, Academy resource planning, network and systems services, computer support and training, and library and media services. The CIO will oversee the Information Technology Division; this includes the Network and Communications Center and Academic Technology Department/Center. The CIO reports to the Associate Head of School for matters that pertain to academic affairs and works closely with the Dean of Faculty as well as directors of each division on matters of technology and curricular integration.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND KEY OBJECTIVES

  • Works with all the school’s constituents to ensure technology is being used appropriately and efficiently within the academic community
  • Serve as visible ambassador of the use of technology across all constituents
  • Provides leadership to the IS Team, providing support for software and hardware requirements for all academic and administrative functions
  • Oversees all campus data networks, structures, policies and procedures
  • Oversees the telecommunications systems, mobile phone systems and the copier/document management network
  • Oversees and manages all technology staff, arranges schedule for coverage, monitors department activity
  • Fosters team collaboration and interdisciplinary work in helping to provide a clear strategy for the use of the data and information across the School
  • Promotes a "client-centered" support atmosphere
  • Works with all major administrative offices to leverage technology through the Worcester Academy business model
  • Be fiscally responsible in managing the technology budget.
  • Identify opportunities for the appropriate and cost-effective investment of financial resources in IS systems and resources, including staffing, sourcing, purchasing, and in-house development
  • Oversee inventory and planned refresh of platform
  • Participates in strategic and operational governance processes of the organization as member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT).
  • Develops and maintains a strategic plan for both academic and operational technology
  • Lead strategic thinking and forward planning to achieve the school’s goals by fostering innovation, prioritizing IS initiatives, and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future IS systems across the organization
  • Keep current with trends and issues in the IS industry, including current technologies and pricing. Advise, counsel, and educate senior administration on their competitive and financial impact
  • Manage technology-related contracts, ensuring continuous delivery of IS services through oversight of service level agreements
  • Update and keep current all Responsible Use Policies, and technology related documents
  • Ensure IS department operations adhere to applicable laws and regulations
  • Serve as chair for the Technology Committee
  • Manage all decisions regarding hardware and software integration
  • Provide ongoing oversight and administrative direction to all ongoing technology projects and all active technology initiatives on campus
  • Define and communicate IS department plans, policies, and standards for the school for acquiring, implementing, and operating IS systems; establish IS department goals, objectives, and operating procedures
  • Supervise recruitment, professional development, retention, and organization of all IS staff in accordance with the school’s budgetary objectives and personnel policies
  • Participates in emergency procedure planning and implementation as member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT).
  • Manage technology related to campus security, including CCTV cameras on all campuses, electronic door systems, and ID card systems

 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Other duties as needed/assigned by the Head of School
  • May perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the Technology Department
  • Responsible for setting goals and reviewing all IS team members

Experience and Skills

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least five to seven years of experience in technology administration in educational setting
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field. Advanced degree preferred
  • Must possess strong technical knowledge with current Hardware, Operating Systems, and current mobile technologies
  • Should have substantial exposure to data processing, hardware platforms, enterprise software applications, and outsourced systems, including email, data, and off site retention
  • Must have extensive knowledge of and experience with a wide range of computer systems and applications
  • Must have experience with enhancing the learning and teaching process through the use of technology in an academic environment
  • Extensive working knowledge of a variety of software, particularly MS Office Suite and Adobe Software Suite
  • Strong knowledge of data and telephone networks, as well as student information systems is critical
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to convey technical subject matter in an understandable manner
  • Proven experience in IS planning, organization, and development
  • Teaching experience preferred
  • Must be able to work intuitively and independently on multiple projects simultaneously and work well under limited time constraints
  • Must be able to present ideas in business- and user-friendly language
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills required to successfully interact with diverse staff, faculty, students and other constituents of the School
  • Excellent understanding of project management principals, strategic planning and execution
  • Proven leadership abilities, with the capacity to motivate in a team-oriented and collaborative environment
  • Must be detail-oriented, creative, flexible and motivated by challenges, setting and managing priorities with stakeholders
  • Willingness to become actively engaged in the lifestyle of an independent boarding schoolRegular consistent attendance and punctuality is required as a condition of employment

Physical Qualifications:

  • Standing/sitting for long periods of time
  • Regularly required to listen, physically direct, and speak
  • Position requiring mobility, including bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), pushing, walking
  • Use of hands and finger to manipulate office equipment, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms

Working Environment:

  • The employee may be exposed to dusty environments
  • On-call availability and periodic long hours of work
  • Ability to work in small spaces with high levels of noise and temperatures
