Job Description

Information Technology (IT) works to support the vision, values, mission, and goals of the University through a strong supportive infrastructure that connects DU communities and helps DU faculty, staff, and students with technology services. The IT Systems Engineering and Support department is responsible for all systems, hardware, software, and datacenter infrastructure that provides data and application services to the entire campus. This includes but is not limited to physical servers, operating systems, SANs, virtual server infrastructure, software applications, utilities, networking, and data center infrastructure (power, cooling).

 

Position Summary

The Computer Operator is responsible for power, cooling, electrical, and environmental monitoring across multiple datacenters on campus in addition to ensuring that campus-wide Public Printing (student printing) services including printers and print release stations are in working order. The Computer Operator also serves as an emergency escalation point to Systems Engineers in Systems Engineering and Support and other departments. Work occurs within a standard IT office and datacenter environment; however, frequently extends to other buildings on campus. Duties will require work around sensitive infrastructure with potentially limited accessibility, occasional use of ladders, moderate noise levels, and working outdoors in bad weather. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate.

 

Essential Functions

  • Monitor and maintain datacenter infrastructure such as UPSs, A/C units, generators, transfer switches, leak detection units, environmental monitors, smoke detection, and fire suppression systems.
  • Coordinate, reactive and preventative infrastructure maintenance throughout the datacenter environment while communicating necessary status updates and impact information.
  • Monitor and maintain campus Public Printer infrastructure such as printers, print release stations, and ID Card readers.
  • Process and track weekly paper and toner orders, pick up and deliver consumables to the various Public Printer locations on campus, as well as process used consumables for recycling.
  • Coordinate, track, and document electronic equipment being decommissioned and prepared for electronics recycling.
  • Configure and maintain electronic access control systems.
  • Create, validate, and maintain internal and customer facing documentation for associated environments.
  • Provide Tier 1 support in a NOC environment by opening tickets, escalating events, and performing daily maintenance activities.
  • As appropriate, performs duties assigned by supervisor.

  • Strong inter-personal communication, collaboration, and customer service skills when interacting with both internal and external audiences with varying technical backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with other system engineers, departments, and clients/customers on both small and large projects.
  • Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and solve problems quickly and completely.
  • Ability to identify and address proactive and reactive equipment service needs.
  • Ability to adaptively prioritize workloads to best meet customer and University needs with minimal or no direction.
  • Ability to utilize self-directed learning to accomplish goals and appropriately expand knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Ability to interpret documents such as safety materials, datasheets, technical manuals, operational manuals, blueprints/plans, and operating procedures.
  • Strong documentation skills to support infrequent, regular, and high-impact job functions alongside cross-training and department documentation goals.

 

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Ability to be trained and retain knowledge about datacenter infrastructure
  • Clean Motor Vehicle Record
  • Ability to transport up to 50 pounds of equipment on a regular basis

 

Preferred Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • At least 2 years' experience operating in a datacenter NOC
  • At least 2 years' experience operating in a colocation datacenter
  • At least 2 years' experience with FAAST smoke detection systems and FM200 fire suppression systems
  • At least 2 years' experience with EATON Powerware UPS systems
  • At least 2 years' experience with Liebert A/C systems
  • At least 2 years' experience with Cummins Power Generation and Generac generators as well as their associated transfer switches
  • At least 2 years' experience with Starline power systems
  • At least 2 years' experience with servicing computer equipment and printers
  • At least 1 year's experience with Windows server
  • At least 1 year's experience with Linux server
  • At least 1 year's experience with supporting client operating systems and software alongside client-server applications

 

Work Schedule

Computer Operator positions are currently staffed Sunday through Saturday. Available shifts may include: Full-time: Sunday 8am-2:30pm, Monday-Thursday 8am-5pm Full-time: Tuesday-Friday 8am-5pm, Saturday 8am-2:30pm. Shifts may occasionally be adjusted/extended to early mornings, evenings, and weekends as necessary to minimize disruption of the University’s on-going activities. Shifts may include days the University is closed.
