The Position

Hawken School is seeking a dynamic and innovative individual committed to teaching the total child. Candidates should be eager to work in a collaborative team-based environment with thoughtful individuals committed to doing school better.  

The essential duties/responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Teach 3 or 4 classes of Computer Science, which may include sections of 9th - 12th grade robotics and other Fab Lab type activities

  • Collaborate with faculty across all departments to integrate computer science and coding into curricula

  • Partner closely with the Director of Maker Spaces and Director of Technology in advancing Hawken’s use of computing technologies

  • Coach or lead significant co-curricular activities within the Upper School as well as in national scale competitions such as science fairs and robotics competitions

  • Serve as an advisor, overseeing the academic and social growth of advisees

  • Perform other non-teaching duties as assigned by the Assistant Head or Head of School

Qualifications

Candidates must possess demonstrated competence and leadership in high school and undergraduate university level Computer Science curriculum development, instruction and pedagogy. A degree in Computer Science is required. Preferred candidates will have an advanced degree and/or some professional computing experience.

Facility with dynamic educational and computing technologies for enhancing the exploration of computational thinking across disciplines and learning is a requirement—especially with grade-appropriate coding software, algorithms and data structures, mobile and web application development, debugging and testing, front and back-end design and operations, Cloud services, AR/VR, accelerated computer graphics, and microprocessor based tools, as well as robotics environments, leagues, and competitions. Expertise in constantly discovering, disseminating, and evangelizing new computational tools to help students and faculty stay current across disciplines is a plus. Experience in mentoring independent student research for science fairs, competitions, and Olympiads is also a plus.

In addition to being flexible, energetic and creative, candidates should have high expectations, a good sense of humor and an exceptional understanding of the developmental needs of high school learners. Candidates should be willing and eager to assist in the life of the School and be effective in dealing with colleagues and parents. Ideal candidates will have strong cross-cultural competency skills and demonstrated experience working in a diverse community.
