Gann Academy seeks candidates for a full time position for the 2017-2018 academic year teaching introductory Computer Sciences classes, teaching a Design Thinking/Innovation elective, managing our emerging Innovation Lab spaces, and working with students and faculty to utilize those spaces and integrate their use into existing curriculum. Successful candidates will have a passion for the teaching of the maker/innovator mindset, a strong background in classroom teaching and pedagogy, experience in designing and building curriculum and programs, and a commitment to collaborating, reflecting, and growing in their teaching practice. Personal qualities such as creativity, curiosity, perseverance, flexibility, versatility, and resilience are desirable as is a willingness to tackle new challenges with an open mind and to work collaboratively with students and faculty alike.

Current goals include the building and growth of a dynamic computer science program, the design and building of a new Innovation Lab as part of a school Learning Commons, and the commitment to skill based, student centered innovative teaching. Primary responsibilities for this position will include the ability to
  • Teach two sections of Computer Science: one on-ramp course on computational thinking and computer science fundamentals, and one traditional Java programming course;
  • Design and teach a Design Thinking/Introduction to Innovation Lab elective;
  • Oversee and manage the current Innovation Lab equipment and spaces;
  • Act as a guide and coach for students and faculty, encouraging, inspiring, and supporting them in the exploration of using student “making” within their existing learning and curricula, and the purposeful use of our innovation spaces; and
  • Enthusiastically champion successes of students and faculty in these endeavors and help promote these programs both inside the building and in the wider Gann community.
A bachelor’s degree in a related field is required, a master’s degree is preferred. In addition to a minimum of three years teaching experience and strong organizational skills, the successful applicant will also have the following:
 
In regard to Computer Science teaching:
  • Strong Computer Science experience, including expertise in Java programming and robotics programming; and
  • Experience teaching Computer Science to a wide range of learners with varying experience.
In regard to Innovation spaces and teaching:
  • Knowledge of design thinking and project-based learning (PBL) principles and experience applying these practices to teaching and learning;
  • A strong background in CAD software of varying levels from TinkerCAD to SolidWorks; and
  • Familiarity with using and maintaining the equipment typically found in innovation labs including 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and laser cutters.
