Crofton House School is welcoming applications for a technician who will manage two design spaces (“maker spaces”) in a school setting. The technician will ensure these spaces are organized, well maintained and fully stocked at all times. Supporting a teacher’s interest for using design thinking as a way to learn, problem-solve, think critically, and create, this individual will work and learn collaboratively with teachers of all grades and disciplines in preparing the spaces for a variety of lessons and activities. In support of the activities taking place in these spaces, the technician will be able to instruct on the safe use and care of the equipment available.

Opportunity and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain two design spaces, “Ideation Space” and “Fabrication Lab”; this includes
  • Organizing and labeling materials and equipment
  • Ordering non-consumable and consumable materials
  • Coordinating use of space in order to distribute access across grades and subjects
  • Storage of student work and small equipment
  • Assist in the selection of equipment for the spaces (in collaboration with design teacher and others)
  • Provide training and support on equipment which requires technical skills and/or safety oversight
  • Work collaboratively with teachers to support teaching and learning in these spaces
  • Oversee a materials and equipment budget
  • Showcase student work in collaboration with teachers

Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience:

  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of makerspace fabrication materials, tools and technology such as 3D printing and 3D scanner
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Experience working in a school setting an asset
  • Work experience in a makerspace, an asset
  • Understanding of the design cycle, as asset
  • Worksafe BC safety certification

Employment and Application Details:

The term of this contract is negotiable within the period from September 2018 - June 2019.

Compensation will be based upon experience and education. Hours are somewhat negotiable. The Design Space Technician must be able to legally work in Canada.
