Director of Digital Strategies and Innovation

The MUSC Libraries seeks a service-oriented, innovative, creative, and forward-thinking individual to join our leadership team as the Director of Digital Strategies and Innovation. Reporting to the Director of Libraries, the Director of Digital Strategies and Innovation will assume leadership for the development and implementation of digital strategies and innovation for the Libraries. He/she will be responsible for the overall administration of systems in support of library operations, maintaining the stability and integrity of a broad range of systems, sets the direction of the library's technology environment, and develops strategic goals and objectives that align with the library's vision of anticipating and exceeding the needs of MUSC and beyond through innovative services, spaces, and information. He/she will be responsible for reshaping the Libraries' IT infrastructure and services to advance the teaching, learning, research, and clinical missions of the Medical University of South Carolina. Candidates must understand the broad landscape of trends in information technology and libraries, and must have a demonstrated track record of successful project management and implementation of technologies and services.
General Responsibilities(click to open)
- Provide strategic direction for developing the library’s digital and technology initiatives.
- Oversee all aspects of information technology for the Libraries.
- Oversee management of 6 classrooms (1 multipurpose room and 5 computer classrooms) and public computing infrastructure consisting of over 190 dual-platform computers and other technologies.
- Oversee development, deployment and support of base images and application packages in a dual-platform environment.
- Enhance library systems and applications, and implement and facilitate the integration of library systems and interoperability between library systems, other campus systems, and cloud services.
- Provide technical leadership for the implementation, support and maintenance of library systems and applications, including but not limited to OCLC WMS, ILLiad, Library web Sites, Springshare platform, CONTENTdm, and other systems as implemented.
- Direct the work of the 4.5 FTE staff.
- Serve as technical liaison to various vendor, service providers, and resource sharing networks.
- Oversee development and continuous improvement of the Library’s website.
- Serves as the Library’s IT representative to MUSC’s Information Solutions group and other university units and colleges.
- Provide technology-related workshops and training for Library staff.
- Collects and analyzes data derived from library systems for University and national reports.
- Actively participate in the academic life of the university, represent the library on university committees and build collaborative and inclusive relationships throughout the university and clinical enterprise

QUALIFICATIONS (click to open)
Required:
- ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library (MLS)/Information Science (MIS) or an Advanced degree in Information Technology or Computer Science.
- Experience working in a major academic/research or large public library setting.
- Evidence of at least 3 years of supervisory experience in an academic setting.
- 3 to 5 years’ experience in integrated library system administration that includes knowledge of design, configuration, administration, management, security, operation, and documentation.
- Experience with using systems including integrated library systems, link resolvers, proxy servers, federated searching, digital asset management tools, electronic resource management systems.
- Broad knowledge of current trends in higher education, learning technologies, and digital library practices.
- Experience with administering relational databases such as MySQL.
- Experience providing end-user support for both Microsoft Windows and Macintosh desktop computers.
- Experience or demonstrated understanding of desktop management applications including Microsoft Active Directory and Deep Freeze.
- Experience or demonstrated understanding on authentication methods including LDAP and Shibboleth.
- Experience or demonstrated understanding of computer networks and network security, firewalls and encryption.
- Experience with server-side scripting and programming languages such as PHP, Perl, Python, VBscript, ASP.NET.
- Experience or demonstrated understanding of standard browser display and application technologies (HTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, jQuery, CGI, XSLT), including usability, accessibility and cross-browser compatibility issues. Experience with one or more of the following: jQuery, Omeka, DSpace, OAI-PMH, Google Analytics.
- Demonstrated record of ongoing professional development.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with OCLC’s WorldShare products.
- Familiarity with the ILLiad Interlibrary Loan Management software.
- Familiarity with the Springshare platform
- Knowledge of XML, CONTENTdm, Digital Commons or another Institutional Repository system.
- Experience with open source software, applications, web tools and new technology.
- Demonstrated ability supporting computers, printers and other peripherals.
- Familiarity with cataloging and metadata standards, formats, and principles, including MARC, BIBFRAME, RDA, FRBR, MODS, Dublin Core, and Linked Data.
