Stanford Medicine seeks a dynamic, experienced academic leader to lead strategy, innovation, and operations for teaching and learning technology and instructional design. Working closely with the Senior Associate Deans for medical and graduate education, CIO, CTO, program directors, teaching faculty, and course staff, the Director, Education Technology coordinates the vital intersections between biomedical education, innovative pedagogy and learning technologies. The position supports the school’s full portfolio of programs spanning UME, GME, CME, and graduate studies. The primary mission is to ensure that the investments and services enable leading-edge teaching and learning for the school of medicine. The director will serve as part of the overall Information Technology leadership team for Stanford Medicine working closely with Stanford HealthCare ensuring that Stanford in on the leading edge of technology in biomedical education globally.


This is a newly created full-time continuing benefits eligible position located on the historic Stanford University campus in Palo Alto and reporting into the Office of Information Resources and Technology (IRT) within the School of Medicine (SoM). Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with key leadership and faculty to develop a strategic vision for educational technology and related services that will inform and support the school’s curriculum reform.

  • Build and facilitate a constituent advisory forum comprised of faculty, students, leaders and stakeholders to enhance and maximize connection to the education mission and the needs of the educators and learners.

  • Lead and oversee support for online learning management systems, instructional design, education space technologies, and learning experiences.

  • Partner with leaders and faculty across the university to support global medical education, professional education, and distance learning initiatives.

  • Lead the educational technology service operation and development portfolio and ensure ongoing high quality service delivery; use metrics to optimize services and identify investment opportunities.

  • Design, implement, and evolve programs and services that support the transformation of teaching and learning through emerging technologies.

  • Stay abreast of new academic-related technologies; sponsor and foster an innovation program that enriches the school’s understanding and use of emerging education technology as it relates to teaching and learning.

  • Collaborate with other technology leaders at the school and across the Stanford campus to manage large-scale educational technology projects

  • Represent Stanford in national and international forums and provide thought leadership with peers throughout Stanford University and lead within national consortiums.

  • Build a highly productive, motivated and diverse team; recruit, lead, and mentor staff through coaching and education; provide a clear vision and sense of mission for the organization.

  • Graduate degree in a related field (education, instructional technology, etc.)

  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience leading educational technology programs.

  • Demonstrated record of developing and managing innovative and effective teaching and learning technologies and learning spaces in support of the educational enterprise.

  • Deep understanding of teaching and learning methods and practice and pedagogy and how they impact and are supported by technology, learning spaces and services.

  • Strong technical understanding of enterprise level systems that support teaching and learning (LMS, curriculum management, evaluation, assessment, video capture, ePortfolio, etc.)

  • Ability to translate vision into practice through competency in the analysis of emerging technologies, budgeting and planning, assessment and evaluation, and metrics driven technology service management.

  • Demonstrated skills in leading a team-base staff in a decentralized and matrixed environment.

  • Proven record of the ability to communicate with and influence key stakeholders in the educational arena including; deans, department chairs, course directors, and other educational IT professionals across the university setting.

  • Record of impact beyond current institution including: publications, participation in professional organizations, and inter-institutional collaborations preferred.

  • Successful grant writing, participation in scholarly publication and management experience preferred.



Bachelor's degree and eight years of increasingly technical work experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.



  • Detailed understanding of relevant business and technical knowledge.

  • Ability to resolve issues quickly and make decisions that meet university objectives, in a collaborative culture.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop staff.

  • Exceptional customer relationship skills, consensus building skills, and ability to establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment.



  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks. 

  • Frequently sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.

  • Occasionally stand/walk, use a telephone. 

  • Rarely writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
