The College of Arts & Media has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Director of Information Technology position.

As the first college in Colorado devoted exclusively to arts and entertainment, the College of Arts & Media understands the influence of modern trends on traditional art forms.  We combine the latest technology with traditional methods, and we encourage our students to incorporate their discoveries of art's emerging dimensions with our comprehensive instruction on its classical forms. The college has three distinct departments, Music & Entertainment Industries Studies (MEIS), Film & Television and Visual Arts. The MEIS Department primarily focuses on commercial music styles. Students are given the option to choose from four distinct emphasis areas of study: Performance, Singer/ Songwriter, Music Business, and Recording Arts. The Department of Film & Television offers students the opportunity to become knowledgeable about working in both Theatre and Film while delving into their special area of interest. Degree emphasis areas in Visual Arts include Art History, Digital Animation, Digital Design, Painting and Drawing, Illustration, Photography, Studio Arts, and Transmedia-Sculpture.

 

Nature of Work

This position is responsible for the operation of all CAM and CAM-CLAS shared computer labs and ensures the continuous delivery and operation of the college’s information systems and technology. This currently includes 19 labs, 3 of which are shared with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS). The IT Director is responsible for sustaining an IT environment conducive to the college’s needs which primarily includes: oversight of computer labs, purchasing and management of hardware and software, establishment of college IT policies and practices, and  ensuring compliance with campus procedures. The IT Director is also responsible for developing and maintaining the IT budget for technical support of the college while assessing and recommending advancing technological interventions and opportunities.   This position should focus on continual improvement of operational effectiveness to support best practices and innovation in information technology. Responsible for the full lifecycle of technology planning, budgeting, purchasing, receiving, implementing, tracking, security and recycling of workstations, servers, laptops, contracts and licenses.

This position reports to and is evaluated by the Assistant Dean of Business & Operations within the College of Arts & Media.

Supervises IT Professional. Hires, supervises and trains student assistants. 

 

Examples of Work Performed

  • Provides leadership and develops strategic plans, processes and policies for Information Technology Management, security, and business continuity. 
  • Provides leadership to internal constituencies such as Deans, Department Chairs, faculty, and staff.
  • Represents CAM on university committees and provides leadership to external constituencies such as CU Denver’s Information Technology Services and the Auraria Higher Education Center.
  • Stays abreast of new technologies and develops strategies and processes to bring new technologies to the lab and teaching environments.
  • Provides leadership and directs operations in CAM and CAM/CLAS computer labs, including installation, updating and troubleshooting of computer systems and other hardware/software products, and ensuring physical and IT security.
  • Provides technical oversight for installation and upgrades to CAM specific servers and workstations.  
  • Maintains legal compliance for software licensing. 
  • Negotiates with vendors to ensure that the University receives the best pricing available for hardware and software products. 
  • Develops lab procedures and policies. 
  • Works with IT Professional to manage daily operations of CAM student computing labs, which includes proper staffing and fiscal management.
  • Coordinate and ensure the timely resolution of technical support requests and escalate to university IT services as needed
  • Serve as a liaison with university IT operations and external vendors to maintain appropriate IT policies, procedures and effective practices.
  • Responsible for IT purchasing, receiving and inventory management for all hardware, software and associated warranties and licenses.
  • Works with IT Professional to establish and maintain a lab schedule that keeps a balance between open hours, classes and special requests for one time meetings. 
  • Works with IT Professional to hire, train and manage student assistants as necessary to staff labs.  
  • Develops budgets for CAM and CLAS approval. Coordinates with the faculty and departments lab users in the development and implementation of assigned lab usage and assigned lab security procedures.
  • Explores new technologies, analyzes and recommends technologies and applications for integration into CAM’s courses and educational initiatives.
  • Makes recommendations regarding ways to use existing technology and new advances in technology to strength and secure the college’s IT infrastructure and curriculum delivery system.
  • Provides guidance and leadership on evaluation, selection, implementation and maintenance of the college’s information systems by research, evaluating alternatives and performing appropriate cost-benefit analysis.
  • Proactively interact with faculty and administration to ensure IT needs are met.
  • Manage core IT infrastructure including computers, software, software licenses and IT networks to ensure high availability of all IT systems.
  • Monitor and evaluate current trends in technology related to desktop and laptop support.
  • Develops and maintains a database and tagging system to track all CAM-owned technology.
  • Analyzes lab usage and makes recommendations and decisions that enhance the student experience and maximize resources.  
  • Manages replacement and rotation of computer lab workstations. 
  • Develops and oversees computer replacement program for faculty and staff. 
  • Manages agreements for shared lab spaces. 
  • Collaborates closely with the Director of Marketing & Communications on web and digital strategy.
  • Maintains and advances CAM’s web presence. 
  • Oversees website edits and corrections, in conjunction with Director of Marketing & Communications.
  • Develops and maintains system for IT requests (edits to website, troubleshooting for faculty and staff, etc.) Manages CAM’s LISTSERV.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary for this position is $78,825.  This position is not eligible for overtime compensation

Qualifications

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively with University faculty, staff and students. 
  • Apple System Administration skills appropriate for management of an environment of 200+ Mac computers, including network authentication via Active Directory, OSX Server and Apple Managed Preferences. 
  • Ability to understand and manage a Net Render environment for Cinema 4D.
  • Demonstrated experience in security issues regarding computer systems and software, including server management best practices, knowledge of network protocols, and ability to perform security scans and patch to resolve issues.
  • Knowledge of academic technology systems and applications and experience with advancing these efforts to improve teaching, learning and academic support. Competent in all aspects of PC and server (both physical and virtual) environments
  • Knowledge in developing Web and Digital Strategies, for example developing video embed code or digitizing video for web distribution. 
  • Knowledge developing shared data and work space infrastructure and understanding of storage requirements for HIPAA, PCI, FERPA etc. data types. 
  • Knowledge in networking administration (printers, admin access, etc.)
  • Understanding of industry trends and best practices
  • Knowledge in classroom technology (projection systems, audio equipment, specialized software, etc.)
  • Knowledge in Web Server management, including but not limited to  SEO, design, use of social media, security, and statistical analysis. Ability to organize, design and manage content using SiteFinity Content Management System. 
  • Ability to take initiative and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 

Minimum Qualifcations

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field. 
  • 5 years experience in systems administration and computer lab management.
  • Demonstrated experience with scripting or programming methods used to automate administrative tasks in a large computing environment.
  • Demonstrated technical and troubleshooting experience
  • Leadership experience
  • Experience with website development and content management systems. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in higher education
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience managing a help desk team
  • Documented success in end-to-end management and sustainability in medium and large scale technology multi-phase and multi-version (long term > 5 yr) projects, in higher education or government.
  • Demonstrable, experience with CAM core technologies including Mac OS X, Mac iOS, Microsoft Active Directory, CMSs and VPN products. 
  • 5+ years-professional experience working as an IT administrator overseeing and performing the installations, configurations and support of these technologies in an enterprise higher-education environment.
