The Director, IT Infrastructure will provide leadership and direction for computing, virtualization, and enterprise storage systems, including design, implementation, support and operations. This position will report to the Executive Director of OIT and will interact with appropriate governance, research, administrative, student and IT groups to analyze the existing computing, virtualization and storage infrastructure to define the roadmap for that infrastructure as the University's needs and opportunities change. 

Areas reporting to the Director include high performance computing, virtualization and storage infrastructure, server administration and digital workspace services. 

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Providing strong leadership, support and management of the computing and storage systems that represent the core technology infrastructure of the University. 

  • Supervising the Computing Services unit managers. 

  • Identifying the direction, skills and tools needed by managers and working with them to meet these needs. 

  • Partnering with the Director of OIT Administration to manage the unit budget. 

  • Maintaining effective relationships with clients. Assisting with communication between users and staff when needed. 

  • Setting unit priorities. Assuring that unit goals are clear. Monitoring unit progress. 

  • Partnering with OIT Enterprise Architect, OIT Directors, Information Security and Distributed IT Directors, to build a cloud migration strategy. 

  • Creating and testing disaster recovery and business continuity plans utilizing a mixture of on-site, off-site and cloud-based resources. 

  • Assuring that the operation of OIT's computing, virtualization and storage infrastructure is aligned with information security best practices and University policies and standards. 

  • Directing the Computing Services unit. The unit is responsible for the following types of activities: 

    • Reviewing project proposals. 

    • Developing and implementing plans for computing, virtualization and storage systems. 

    • Providing on-call support for computing, virtualization and storage systems. 

    • Providing systems analysis, problem solving support, and programming support to provide efficient and effective use of computing, virtualization and storage systems in support of the University's goals and objectives. 

    • Meeting with users and staff to determine the impact of proposed changes in hardware or software for users. 

    • Assisting with the evaluation of third party software and hardware. 

    • Planning and managing data storage and archival operations and solutions. 

  • Participating in university computing, virtualization and storage infrastructure planning and evaluation. 

  • Planning and assisting Executive Director in developing day-to-day policies and procedures. 

  • Collaborating with the Project Management Office and Quality Assurance Office to ensure that unit goals are met. 

  • Reviewing maintenance contracts for hardware and software and making recommendations for change as appropriate. 

  • Other duties as assigned and in support of the University.  

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Business Administration, Management, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field and six years' experience in management, project planning, and budgeting. 

Solid functional and technical knowledge of computing infrastructure, virtualization, enterprise storage systems, networking, and high performance computing. 

Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills. 

Strong project management skills. 

Solid technical background to include implementations in higher education administrative, academic and business management systems.
