Job Description Summary

The University of Southern Indiana invites applications for the position of Director of IT Infrastructure. As a direct report to the Chief Information Officer, the Director of IT Infrastructure is responsible for the effective and efficient operation of all Linux and Windows servers, network administration, and VoIP telecommunications equipment used to support campus IT services. This role will emphasize formalizing processes, implementing change control, securing systems and networks, and exploring and planning cloud migration. USI’s infrastructure currently consists of over 200 Linux and Windows servers which are 90% virtualized, wired and wireless plant primarily Cisco, and an on-premise Cisco VoIP telecommunications platform.

As a member of the IT senior leadership team, the Director of IT Infrastructure contributes to the development and execution of IT strategy and ensures its alignment with the needs of the campus. This role provides strong leadership and coordination, vision, strategy, broad-based planning and hands-on responsibility operating USI’s IT Infrastructure.

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field required. Minimum of ten years related experience with at least five years of supervisory experience. Professional and management experience must demonstrate increasing level of responsibility and supervision of staff.  
  • Knowledge of Windows and Linux system administration and network storage device administration, including maintaining, upgrading, and securing.

  • Knowledge of networking administration, especially Cisco technologies. Working understanding of Cisco firewalls, routers and switches is required. Ability to architect, design, and troubleshoot network implementations.

  • Knowledge of VoIP telecommunications, especially Cisco technologies. Detailed understanding for implementing VoIP telephony, and strong troubleshooting capabilities.

  • General knowledge across all other facets of IT.

  • In-depth understanding of IT security issues. Knowledge of implementing IT security measures within Cisco firewalls, switches and routers. Knowledge of best practices for server hardening and firewalling.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently using sound judgment in technical knowledge and problem solving required.

  • Attention to detail and timely follow up skills required.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills and professional manner dealing with faculty, staff, students, and vendors required.

  • Ability to develop and effectively deliver training materials to a non-technical audience.
