Reporting to the Associate CIO, the Director of Network & Communications (NetCom) Infrastructure is responsible for the technical operation of all University networking and telecommunication infrastructures and services.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Leads and directs a Network & Communications team and is responsible for the planning, design, engineering, testing, implementation, operation, extension, installation, repair, maintenance, improvement, and monitoring of a progressive, secure, and robust converged voice, video and data network infrastructure. 

  • Oversee and manage networking and telecommunications technical operations and resources in a progressive, efficient, effective and fiscally responsible manner.  This position is a “working manager” in that s/he may be responsible for the day-to-day configuration, management and monitoring of some portion of the network and communications infrastructure.

  • Meet with University committees and officials, interfaces with peer institutions and numerous vendors, work with campus and project architects and campus planning committees, and serve on ad hoc committees. 

  • Keep abreast of emerging network and communications infrastructure technologies applicable to the University and remain highly technically competent. 

  • Works closely with the Associate CIO and IT leadership on short and long-term planning for network and communication infrastructure, including operational improvements and best practices. 

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree with a minimum of five years of relevant networking and telecommunications management experience OR a combination of education and experience equivalent to a minimum of ten years of relevant networking and telecommunications management experience.  

  2. In-depth and substantive knowledge of and experience in networking and telecommunications infrastructure and related applications; comprehensive knowledge of maintenance procedures and equipment analysis; comprehensive experience related to LAN/WAN/WLAN/VoIP using diverse transport protocols over copper, fiber optics and wireless infrastructures; proven comprehensive knowledge of network and IT telecommunications concepts, principles, applications, system management and design.

  3. Familiarity with IT architectural frameworks and development methodologies, tools, and techniques.

  4. Familiarity with numerous information technology disciplines.

  5. Ability to supervise; foster supportive working relationships, teamwork, and staff engagement.

  6. Ability to develop, oversee and manage projects.

  7. Demonstrated ability to motivate staff and participate in meetings and other collective activities; strong and effective oral and written communication skills; ability to relate business issues to technology, and vice versa.

  8. Strong demonstrated knowledge in wiring standards using National Electrical Code, TIA/EIA Telecommunications Building Wiring Standards, and BICSI Telecommunications Distribution Methods.
