Position Summary:

The Director, Network & Infrastructure is responsible for managing and expanding operational activities associated with the University’s network, servers & telecommunications infrastructure. The scope of the supported infrastructure includes over 160 servers both physical and virtual, a wired and wireless network in excess of 15,000 endpoints across four campuses and in over 60 buildings, 100+ terabytes of SAN storage and a VOIP telephone system with more than 1400 phone lines, voicemail and unified communications. The Manager, Network & Infrastructure together with the CIO jointly share responsibility for IT data security and privacy concerns.

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in IT or a related field plus three years of experience in people and project management in addition to ten+ years of hands on experience with network infrastructure or equivalent combination of education and experience. Industry certifications in a relevant field is a plus. The manager’s position is hands-on and the manager is expected to be able to perform the duties of any member of the network and infrastructure team

Valid driver’s license with good driving record; must be insurable.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability:

  • Able to work well under aggressive deadlines.
  • Thorough knowledge of data communications and network technologies and server hardware, storage systems and operating systems
  • Excellent project management skills; ability to organize and prioritize multiple complex projects.

  • Experience with Aruba, Nortel, Cisco, MS Server and IP Telephony products desirable preferred.
  • A practical level of experience implementing and administrating common TCP/IP-based services, including DNS, DHCP, HTTP, FTP, SMTP, etc.
  • Ability to take direction from others, as well as work independently with limited direct supervision.
  • Dependability, flexibility and willingness to adhere to non-standard work schedule mandatory. This position is a 24×7×365 support position which includes rotating on call support responsibilities.
  • Experience with performance monitoring and analysis on large networks.
  • Experience using tools associated with packet sniffing and packet shaping.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of network security principles
  • Ability to carry cell phone at all times and respond to calls from CIO.
  • Must be fluent in English verbal and written.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to travel between campuses.

Physical Requirements

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Activity includes keyboarding, standing and/or sitting, walking, lifting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, talking and hearing. Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as viewing a computer terminal and reading printed materials. Subject to both environmental conditions; activities occur inside and outside.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage Network and infrastructure staff.
  • Responsible for the operation of three full function data centers.
  • Responsible for hiring and performance evaluations of the staff within the network and infrastructure team.
  • Proactively develop strategies that enable prompt resolutions to issues regarding IT data security and privacy.
  • Install, configure, support and troubleshoot routers, firewalls and switches and all infrastructure components.
  • Monitor the health of the network infrastructure. Report and resolve any issues.
  • Identify, research, and propose new technologies, services, and/or products to enhance the functionality, and/or cost effectiveness of the college’s network and telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Maintain and improve the college’s network and enterprise systems in order to provide maximum performance and reliability.
  • Collaborate with OIT senior level staff on projects and division-wide initiatives.
  • Revise and/or develop college OIT policies and procedures, including but not limited to policies pertaining to network technologies, enterprise systems, technology support and network security.
  • Ensure timely resolution of service incidents and completion of client service requests.
  • Manage operational area projects including completion of standard project plan documentation, development and management of project schedule and resources, and regular project status reporting on schedule, budget, and expected results.
  • Ensure thorough research, development, and communication regarding the introduction of new equipment, software or services, in order to minimize the introduction of failure and vulnerabilities into the college’s technical environment.
  • Lead staff in adapting to new equipment, software, services, policies and procedures.
  • Build a positive team environment in which roles and responsibilities are clearly defined aligned with industry best practices.
  • Ensure appropriate training/staff development.
  • Develop a client service-oriented, efficient staff team.
  • Evaluate and performance appraise, mentor and guide Network and Enterprise staff.
