Fountain Valley School is a co-ed, college-preparatory boarding/day school enrolling 230 students in grades 9-12. Founded in 1930, the School provides a rigorous, global curriculum in academics, arts, athletics and the outdoors in a diverse community to develop young adults who are courageous, open-minded, self-reliant, curious, and compassionate.
 
Position Summary:
Working with the COFO, Head of School, Assistant Head of School, and Dean of Faculty, the Director of Technology position requires skills in multiple areas of Information Technology applied in a dynamic work environment. The Information Technology organization is an internal service provider to the overall organization. The incumbent will be responsible for managing Information Technology services, staff, applications, and operations across the organization in support of both the academic and business missions of the school. The incumbent must possess strong verbal and written communication skills for daily interaction with internal customers at all levels of the organization as well as outside parties.        
 
Management Qualification and Responsibilities:
  • Act as Chair for the Technology Department and attend Faculty Meetings.
  • Ability to organize and manage IT staff and other departmental resources to ensure that business requirements are met across the institution.
  • Work closely with other departments to develop monitor and enforce appropriate IT-related policies.
  • Schedule and assign staff to meet both daily support needs and project schedules.
  • Participate in as well as provide oversight to definition and analysis of systems requirements based on understanding of business needs.
  • Participate in the preparation and management of IT departmental budgets within defined institution guidelines.
  • Ability to negotiate and manage 3rd party vendor contracts to optimize the institution’s received value.
  • Responsible to ensure that all institutional data and IT assets are backed up, secure and protected from both internal and external threats according to institution policy.
  • Provide Quality Assurance oversight on all efforts and deliverables from the IT department.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Close interaction with in-house clients across various departments and at all levels of the institution including senior management.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining an environment of continuous and consistent improvement across all efforts of the department.
  • Develop and mentor IT staff. Prepare and deliver employee performance assessments on a defined schedule.
  • Define, monitor and meet defined service and operational metrics across the department.
  • Manage on-call after-hours support.
Technical Qualifications and Responsibilities:
  • Familiarity in a multi-domain, highly integrated, server / network environment including content filtering, virus protection, spam filtering, and intrusion detection/prevention services.
  • Strong familiarity with hardware and software from key vendors including, Apple, Microsoft, Cisco, VMware and other industry leading vendors.
  • Ability to participate and assist, at a meaningful level, in the design of hardware and software solutions to meet education, business, and other institutional requirements.
  • Ability to define and manage projects using appropriate structured methodology.
  • Strong Troubleshooting skills and ability to resolve complex technical issues in a timely manner, working either in-person or remotely.
  • Consistently takes a proactive approach to support of essential hardware components and software systems
  • Server Room to include HVAC, UPS/Power, Telephone and Voicemail system, Fiber ring, et cetera.
  • Ensures that the department maintains up-to-date and appropriate documentation.
  • Ability to manage 3rd party providers in the performance of their responsibilities on time and on budget.
  • Strong ability to evaluate, recommend and implement new technologies and upgrades.
  • Working knowledge of VMware, Oracle, SQL Server and various server and desktop operating systems as well as standard desktop applications including Office, Google Doc Administration, Exchange and others.
  • Consistently takes a proactive approach to monitoring and maintaining system performance across a variety of servers and network components within the institution.
  • Commitment to keeping personal skillset up-to-date and relevant to the institution’s IT environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 General Qualifications:
  • 4 yr. degree in Information Technology or related field, Master’s preferred.
  • 10+ years of relevant IT experience.
  • 2+ years in IT management.
  • A+, Microsoft, Apple, Cisco certifications a plus.
  • Experience with educational systems and student information systems are desired.
  • Highly motivated, able to manage daily priorities and tasks across the IT organization to meet department and institution goals.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive personal and institution vehicles.
 Working Conditions:
  • Work in a boarding and/ or day school campus, in office environment with high school students, faculty and administration.
  • Hours and schedule may vary. Ability to work outside normal business hours required periodically.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs regularly.
  • Able to sit, stand, bend, twist, and turn.
