MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Episcopal School of Los Angeles is to create and sustain a campus devoted to nurturing souls and minds in an intellectually rigorous and spiritually curious academic community.

The purpose of the school is to enable young people to thrive in an atmosphere of diversity and to become ethical leaders in communities of faith, the nation, and the world. All work shares the same goal: to manifest and embody what it means to be a person who loves to learn and a person who responds to what they believe in with his/her words, faith and action. In the Anglican academic tradition of honor, respect, integrity and joy we will lift up what it means to be a community at work, study, play and service.

BACKGROUND

The Episcopal School of Los Angeles was founded in 2009 with a rather unusual financial model. Unlike any other school in Los Angeles, we have devoted over 50% of our operating budget to scholarship. 30% of our families receive full tuition support, more than 60% receive some form tuition assistance, and those who are able to pay full tuition are dedicated to being a part of a community that serves the deepest needs of our city.

School uniforms, provision of school-owned technology to students, seated family-style lunch with faculty, a long school day (7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.), and high expectations for community and personal behavior are all elements of what makes ESLA stand out as both a traditional and modern, innovative institution. Our school has taken Hollywood and the Los Angeles community by surprise and by storm. While we face a myriad of questions around growth, economics, race, and language barriers, the work is a privilege and we believe we are offering a tremendous gift to our community.

This coming fall, we will enter our 5th full-time school year serving students from 6th-12th grade (after adding a grade each year since our inception, we will graduate our first class in 2017). The first three years of ESLA’s life consisted of offering tuition-free STEM programs to children all over the city. Those early days allowed us to partner with public, charter and independent schools and to play with what has become a creative and compelling STEM program in our middle school. We will reengage our tuition-free after school and summer programs in the summer and fall of 2016 and look forward to returning to that work in addition to running our full-time school.
