Salary: $98,303 - $120,962/Annual Salary - Classified MGMT Salary Schedule

DEFINITION: 

The Director of Information and Technology shall be responsible to direct, manage, supervise, plan and coordinate the activities and operations of the Information and Technology Services department and shall direct the implementation of the Wide Area Network and its interface with the Local Area Network. Provide leadership and guidance in the implementation of district wide educational technology.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Under the direction of the Superintendent, supervises Information and Technology Services (ITS). As a member of the district management team, works cooperatively with other members of the management team in the formulation and implementation of district policies.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

•        Maintains communication and works in a collaborative manner with district administrators, principals, and directors to facilitate decision-making and problem-solving in the areas of computer and technology services;

•        Participate in development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, policy priorities, standards, and procedures;

•        Facilitates communication and coordination among instructional staff for the purpose of meeting curriculum guidelines and ensuring that state mandates are achieved;

•        Directs and coordinates the development, implementation, modification and evaluation of school site technology plans;

•        Assists schools with infrastructure design, acquisition and development;

•        Directs and coordinates staff development in technology;

•        Develops bid specifications for computer/network hardware/peripherals for the purpose of implementing and maintaining services and/or programs;

•        Evaluates hardware and software to ensure suitability, compatibility and economy prior to purchase;

•        Coordinates the assessment of current and future technology requirements of the District;

•        Develops and manages a budget for the purpose of ensuring efficient program operations and complying with established fiscal guidelines;

•        Directs and helps maintain the District Website;

•        Serves as network administrator responsible for documentation, backup and restoration, security, virus protection, performance monitoring and user access rights;

•        Plans, installs, configures, maintains and updates network or application software including operating systems, security, utilities and file management;

•        Maintains software site licenses and supervises proper legal and software usage;

•        Reviews curriculum, develops training programs, identifies best practices, and coordinates integration of technology into the learning process;

•        Works to set standards for technology use for students and instructional staff;

•        Attends instructional events and meetings with other district and site leaders;

•        Contributes to the leadership and direction in technology planning, assessment programs, equipment acquisition, applications development, and establishment of standards for hardware and software;

•        Prepares bid request, evaluates proposals, and oversees vendor contacts;

•        Manages and implements technology grants and related budgets;

•        Plans, installs, configures, maintains and troubleshoots network hardware including cabling, servers, workstation network interface cards, hubs, tape back-up units, bridges and routers;

•        Interfaces with vendors for support of computer hardware and software;

•        Maintains a variety of records and logs related to installation configurations, inventory, cabling and equipment maintenance and licenses;

•        Coordinates with District/Site Technology Committees;

•        Coordinates with County Office of Education in technology matters;

•        Designs and implements district wide Internet connections;

•        Performs related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Understanding of the technical support needs of a school district as they apply to administration and instruction.

Knowledge of:

•        Possess mastery of technical skills such as:

•        Local-area and wide-area network topologies

•        Cross-platform solutions and cabling strategies

•        Current K-12 instructional practices; principles and techniques of educational technology; principles and techniques for project planning, scheduling, and control; broad knowledge of public sector business practices; emerging trends in instructional technology, and management of budgets;

•        Detailed knowledge of Windows platforms and other related hardware and software;

•        Current industry networking systems and connectivity;

•        Knowledge and experience with SASI;

•        Computer operating systems;

•        Detailed knowledge of Windows 2000, XP, 2003 Server and SQL Server;

•        Principles and operations of LAN’s, WAN’s, and related software;

•        Documentation procedures related to network installation;

•        Principles and procedures of record keeping and computer data back-up methodologies;

•        Installation, configuration and maintenance of network backbones including fiber-optics, category 5, 10 base, 10 base T, hubs, routers, switches and file servers;

•        Microcomputer hardware/software and peripheral equipment diagnosis and repair;

•        Supervisory, training and management skills.

Ability to:

•        Plan, organize and coordinate technology resources;

•        Develop and implement procedures to optimize systems efficiency and performance;

•        Design and implement LAN’s and/or WAN’s;

•        Analyze problems and formulate logical conclusions;

•        Effectively manage multiple tasks and set priorities;

•        Operate a full-range of computer, peripheral equipment, communications equipment and software programs properly and efficiently;

•        Provide technical assistance to district computer users with widely varying levels of expertise;

•        Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing;

•        Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contracted in the course of work;

•        Write system procedures manuals and policies;

•        Establish working relationships with staff, parents and community and agency representatives;

•        Complete  assignments promptly and accurately;

•        When appropriate, share and/or delegate responsibilities to promote leadership training/development;

•        Utilize appropriate professional channels for communicating personal/professional concerns;

•        Work in a team environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may lift and/or carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 30 pounds on a routine basis and occasionally list/carry equipment and supplies weighting up to 75 pounds. Bend, crouch, kneel, crawl, twist, and stoop in confided spaces while installing computer equipment and cables. Push/pull equipment and cables, reaching in all directions. Sit at a desk for extended periods of time.

 

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

Experience:

•        Two to five years of directly related experience, including overseeing technology implementation, system development and computer/data processing training.

•        Experience as a LAN or WAN administrator.

 

Education:

•        Equivalent to completion of Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or related field. (Bachelor Degree requirement may be waived with years of increasingly responsible experience in computer information technology beyond the two years of required experience.)

 

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

•        Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver’s License.
