Grand Valley State University seeks a permanent, 0.5 FTE Director (20 hours a week). The Director of the Technology Commercialization Office, reports directly to the Vice Provost for Research Administration. The Director will oversee Grand Valley State University’s Technology and Commercialization Office which manages GVSU's growing portfolio of inventions and licenses, supports the entrepreneurial and applied research efforts of faculty, students, and staff. The Director facilitates collaborations between GVSU and other institutions (for- and not-for-profit), and leads continuous improvement efforts for Technology Commercialization best practices.   

Essential Functions

  • Include educating faculty/researchers/inventors about, and guiding them through, the technology commercialization process, evaluating new technology disclosures and pursuing patent protection of those with commercial promise.

  • Marketing promising technologies to appropriate commercial development partners, including startups, and negotiating licensing agreements with companies willing to invest in translating GVSU's technology into products. 

  • Handling MTAs, NDAs, DUA's.

  • Helping negotiate industry-sponsored research agreements.

  • Recruiting client/tenants into incubator space.

  • Integrating work with the Office of Sponsored Programs.

  • Managing the technology transfer and industry engagement database.

Required Qualifications

  • Master-level trained Individual.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in negotiating business contracts, including industry-sponsored research and technology licensing.

  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with academic faculty, administrators, technology commercialization colleagues, and members of industry.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead people and attain results through others.

  • Excellent analytical, marketing, negotiation, and leadership skills.

  • Strong industrial and legislative network.

  • Must be a self-starter capable of handling a docket of highly technical inventions, managing a complex patent and business-sponsored project portfolio, and marketing and licensing of technology with minimal supervision.

  • Experience in project management and successfully leading a multi-disciplinary team through implementation.

  • Personal attributes such as strong leadership and communication skills, high levels of creativity and energy, an ability to inspire others, integrity, and respect for all individuals. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in a research-based discipline.

  • Knowledge and experience in life sciences or physical sciences.

  • Experience in funding early stage technology commercialization.

  • Experience in marketing and licensing of intellectual property.
