Northern State University invites applications for a 12-month, exempt position as Director of Technology Innovation. This position serves as a primary resource for administrative and teaching and learning technologies through which faculty, staff, and students can explore, discover, and utilize a variety of technologies. This position will work with the other departments to support 21st century learning and business strategies. This position will coordinate the development and delivery of training solutions to improve the understanding of technology concepts, as well as consult on best practices for instructional and non-instructional use. The position will also work with staff to understand technology needs, coordinate and mentor staff to pilot programs to investigate new technologies and functionalities and promote technology adoption and training that works to meet campus needs. Working in concert with other technology departments, the position will provide leadership and guidance in the selection and adoption of various technologies and strategies to enhance physical and virtual classroom environments and facilitate the use of technologies in business and office settings to enhance productivity.
The Director position is also responsible for the oversight of the Technology and E-learning Fellowship program, the learning management system administration and facilitates the training and support for administrative, teaching, and learning technologies. This position is a key driver for continuous improvement and technology innovation.

Essential responsibilities of the position include:

  • Coordinating all activities of the department while upholding Northern’s mission, vision and values;

  • Providing consultation and training services to faculty in the use of effective teaching and learning technologies for face-to-face, blended and online learning environments; 3) Serving as a leader in the successful identification and adoption of campus technology for both instructional and non-instructional use;

  • Researching and demonstrating the use of emerging technologies for teaching, learning and administrative functions;

  • Assisting faculty and staff in selecting, evaluating and experimenting with various applications to support their needs;

  • Overseeing the Technology and E-learning Fellowship program;

  • Analyzing data to detect trends and draw meaningful conclusions on student, faculty and staff technology needs;

  • Fulfilling other duties as may be assigned by the Vice President of Technology and Chief Information Officer.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interview, select, supervise and evaluate department personnel;

  • Establish goals, strategies and work plans to ensure optimized operation of the department;

  • Oversee the Technology and E-learning Fellowship Program.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIRMENTS:

  • Master’s degree required, with focus in information technology, computer science or related field;

  • At least two years’ experience in management and supervision of professional personnel;
  • Preference for experience working in a technology department in higher education;

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong technical knowledge of learning management systems and related instructional technology systems;

  • Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with the Technology Services staff, the campus community and the regental system;

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills;

  • Ability to multi-task and demonstrated knowledge of project management;

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Working at a computer terminal for extended periods of time.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Works in a standard office environment;

  • Candidates must be willing to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings and weekends/holidays if necessary.
