Summary of Duties

The Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine (ESFCOM) at Washington State University is embarking on the accreditation and development of a next generation medical school designed to train students to be physician leaders, who innovate, adapt and discover in an ever changing healthcare landscape. The School is now inviting applications for the position of Education Technology Specialist.

The Educational Technologist is part of the ESFCOM Information Technology team and helps support learning via the use of innovative technology solutions.

Position duties include, but are not limited to: providing educational technology support and training for an array of medical education and classroom technology applications; collaborate with subject matter experts to implement technology that will enhance and elevate the educational experience and impact the quality of learning for students while reducing cognitive overload; independently perform consulting, design, maintenance, quality assurance, troubleshooting and/or other technical support work; continuous quality improvement initiatives in medical education; participating on innovative projects; and other duties as needed.

60% – Instructional Technology Support

Serves as subject matter expert for support, design, and maintenance of instructional technology including all medical education applications, Osmosis, Sketchy Medical, Explain Everything, Apple products, media systems and services, learning analytics, technology events and workshops, and E. Flo MD (learning and curriculum management system).

Provides complex technical support and maintenance including troubleshooting, answering questions, investigating problems, modifying programs and processes, making operational enhancements, etc., to end-users of ESFCOM software products.

Troubleshoots and resolves complex technology problems; keeps faculty, staff, and students apprised of support delays and expected time-to-solution.

Administers general use classroom technology operations. Provides high-level technical assistance during instruction sessions and collaborates with campus IT services on the maintenance of instructional technology equipment. Determines hardware and software requirements based on conducting analyses of end user or project need. Procures hardware and software to fulfill these requirements.

Schedules session recordings; ensures they begin and end on time, and monitors recordings to ensure that audio visual components are being captured.

Trains faculty and staff, and creates training documents as needed, on use of developed instructional technology solutions. Provides expert Instruction to customers one-on-one and in groups on effective use of software and equipment.

Takes all feedback about the instructional technology needs of the college. Provides strategic analysis in collaboration with Educational Technology Specialist 3 in researching solutions to specific items identified in feedback.

Provides feedback to internal IT team regarding learning platforms, applications, hardware, and other technologies.

Provides insights about emerging trends and industry standards for the development and delivery of courses.

25% – Instructional Design Support

Collaborates with and supports the Educational Technology Specialist 3 and the Senior Instructional Designer on the technical development and innovative delivery of courses using content provided by the subject matter experts.

Performs video-lecture creation, editing, and support technologies including the storage of files.

Assists with the creation and publishing of iBooks, Articulate Storyline, podcasts, or other voice-over-presentation tools and educational technology content publishing tools that are used in a flipped classroom.

Reviews and modifies classroom resources so they meet established requirements.
Conducts needs analysis and advises faculty and staff on how to apply instructional technology to their specific teaching style and for the delivery of an impactful and innovative educational experience.

Provides consulting for content structure and design. Provides feedback on development of coursework that pivots on technology in the classroom. Provides resources and feedback on best practices for course and content development for electronic environments.

Provides expert advice on how to improve accessibility in course and ensure that course materials are compliant with relevant legislation.

10% – Information Technology Support

Gathers customer service and equipment needs for medical education applications, hardware and software products, network infrastructure equipment, or telecommunications software or hardware. Attends fact gathering sessions, accesses and retrieves data, and analyzes problems. Solves problems with no assistance.

Responds to telephone calls, emails, web tickets, and in-person requests for technical support. Obtains concise problem information to resolve the problem.

Provides help desk technical support, and/or responds to trouble reports from users and identifies and resolves problems within their control. Performs component-level diagnostics to determine need for replacement.

Advises users on the use of systems, hardware, and software; researches product information.

Provides new employee technology orientation.

Assists other analysts on large projects. Serves on project teams as required.

Tests new releases of software/hardware. May assist other staff in testing software/hardware with large operational consequences or of the highest complexity.

Develops and conducts software application and system operation training for users such as explaining features and functionality; training users on use of applications; developing effective help screens.

Develops pro-active, customer-focused strategies to meet the needs of clients.

Interacts with other campus units on behalf of ESFCOM IT and the College of Medicine.

5% – Other

Participate on innovative technology projects and perform other related work as required.

Continually develop and enhance job-related knowledge and ability.
