Crane's Design and Engineering Center:
The Crane School Design and Engineering Center is a unique, multidisciplinary, project based program. Originally modeled after the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy, the DEC focuses on five disciplinary categories: Art and design, nature of materials and fabrication, computer aided design (CAD), electronics, and programming. The DEC instructs grades 1-8 in using physical principles applied in creative ways to solve problems. Closely aligned to NGSS, DEC curriculum is focused around the creation of complex, useful and beautiful projects that combine learning standards with the ability for individual interpretation and creativity. Power and hand tools are introduced in grades 1-5. Soldering stations, laser cutting and 3D printing are key in grades 6-8. Safety always comes first and an understanding of safety protocols for machining, chemicals and other potential risks is essential. Adobe Illustrator is our primary vector software for use with the laser cutter. Tinkerdad is used for 3D printing. These applications are introduced in 6th grade. Sketchup is used for the 8th grade architectural capstone project in which students create both a digital walkthrough model as well as a three dimensional presentation model of a home of their own design.
