POSITION DETAILS

The CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) provides online and on campus degree and certificate programs that meet the needs of adults who are looking to finish or transition into a bachelor’s degree, earn a master’s degree or certificate in a specialized field, advance in the workplace, or change careers.

Home to the first fully online degree programs at the City University of New York, CUNY SPS offers fully accredited degree and certificate programs for students who want the flexibility and convenience of online education. In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, the Executive Director will be responsible for the School’s overall technology infrastructure: strategy & planning; organization & operations; and, acquisitions & deployment. And will:

  • Provide leadership and vision for the strategic development and management of computing information systems, network communications, telecommunications, media services, instructional applications, information security systems, and campus technology infrastructure that will support our students, faculty, and staff;
  • Direct technology for the School, including network, server, desktop, online and classroom, telecommunications, and security infrastructure; help desk and technical support services; web, database, and systems application development; and, budget, contracts, accounts payable, personnel management;

  • Provide leadership and oversee the CUNY SPS IT unit;

  • Ensure that technology projects are on schedule, within allocated appropriations, and successfully completed;

  • Manage the IT budget and propose budgets for out years;

  • Develop the School’s technology roadmap within the context of multiyear technology plans;

  • Through active communication and consultation with faculty, students, staff, and administrators, ensure solutions are meeting the changing demands within the College and are user-based;
  • Manage and oversee the campus network infrastructure to ensure the stability, reliability, and security of college systems, data, applications, and information, as well as to meet the changing technology demands of the various School stakeholders;

  • Support campus wide e-business initiatives that assist administration, faculty, and students through the design and development of web-based application services;
  • Demonstrate a continuous effort to improve operations, improve customer service, streamline and re-engineer work processes, and remain current with trends and emerging technologies;

  • Maintain processes for effective information technology security management and policy compliance;
  • Set policies to ensure privacy of data and security of data processing facilities;

  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and direct the activities of the Office of Information Technology, both within the campus and University-wide;

  • Proactively offer and respond to technology solutions and support to college academic and administrative unit Directors to improve customer service throughout the campus environment;
  • Collaboratively work with the University CIO in the design and implementation of enterprise-wide technology solutions and services that will produce strategic, operational, technology, and cost benefits for the School;

  • Recommend, evaluate, develop, and implement support systems for the educational mission, strategic priorities, goals, and objectives of the School;
  • Lead strategic planning for the enhancement of academic, administrative, and instructional systems;

  • Serve as the main liaison to University administrative, academic, and student service forums related to technology;

  • Develop ways for IT to engage with the campus community, e.g, security workshops, technology trends, brown bag lunches;

  • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Administration and Finance.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below.

  • Eight (8) years of experience in information technology and/or information services, with at least five (5) years of demonstrated managerial experience in an institution of higher education, including the supervision of a complex IT department;

  • Management experience that includes strategic planning, budget and personnel management, in depth knowledge of computer, network, and security systems and operations, student information systems, media technology, telephone systems and operation networking, and wireless technology;

  • Excellent project management skills;

  • An understanding of the unique requirement and challenges of administrative and academic technology in higher education;
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies and new trends and applications of information technology in higher education, as well as best practices in the management of information technologies, systems, analysis, design, and presentation;

  • A proven record as a leader and manager who has transformed information technology operations within a large and diverse organization is desirable;

  • Outstanding communication skills, including the ability to express complex technology concepts in a clear, concise manner; experience developing and managing strategic technology with administration and instructional systems;

  • A clear information technology vision, creative thinking, collaborative management style, and the ability to foster long-term relationships with the School’s many constituencies;

  • Experience with ERP, CRM and Blackboard systems; and, re-engineering/re-organizing business processes;

  • Strong leadership skills including flexibility and consensus-building;

  • Managerial experience training and developing staff of varying levels of skill and experience;

  • Excellent verbal, writing, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to work effectively, collaboratively, and cooperatively with diverse students, faculty, staff, and Constituents;

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to establish plans, manage a large workload.
