The Florida Institute of Technology seeks a highly innovative and user-oriented individual to join the Evans Library as Head of Library Information Technology. This is a non-tenure track faculty position that reports to the Assistant Dean, Access and Discovery. The Head of Library IT will provide strategic direction, vision and technical expertise for the systems, technologies, and digital initiatives of the Library. This position will manage the operation of all library systems, including the Digital Scholarship Laboratory, and provide leadership in implementing innovative technologies that support experiential learning and emerging Library services.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the day-to-day management and support of all library information systems and infrastructure, ensuring optimal performance and a superior experience for users. Occasional evenings and weekend hours are required to handle system outages and routine maintenance.

  • Leads the operation of the Digital Scholarship Lab and, in collaboration with appropriate library liaisons, develops relationships and collaborations between the Lab and other campus communities to promote, implement, and support digital scholarship services.

  • Advises Library leadership on current and emerging technologies that would advance the research, teaching, and digital initiatives at Evans Library.

  • Directly supervises 1-4 library faculty or staff.

  • Collaborates with Library faculty and staff and vendor support personnel to provide frontline troubleshooting and technical support for all staff and public computers and all library systems accessible through the Library’s infrastructure.

  • Serves as the Library’s primary liaison to Campus IT, sharing technical information and collaborating on common technology initiatives.

  • Participates in Library and university committees.

  • Assists with disaster preparedness related to computers and networks.

Experience and Education

Required

  • ALA accredited MLIS or equivalent, or an advanced degree in a technology-related field.

  • At least 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience in IT-related project management in a library setting, preferably an academic library.

  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.

  • Knowledge of current library technologies, platforms, systems, and products that support information access and discovery.

  • Understanding of enterprise library applications such as integrated library systems, discovery services, OpenURL resolvers, proxy services, and digital repositories especially dSpace or similar.page1image21648

  • Working knowledge of HTML, web standards and programming/scripting languages such as PHP, Python, Javascript, or Unix shell scripting. At least some PHP knowledge required.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and build effective partnerships.

Desired

  • Proficiency in server management including Linux/Unix and Windows administration, shell scripting, web and Java server administration.

  • Experience with emerging digital technologies and an understanding of how technology has, and continues, to transform academic libraries, scholarship and teaching.

  • Familiarity with library technology standards and protocols such as Z39.50, XML, OAI/PHM harvesting protocol, MARC and Dublin Core.
