Under direction, to plan, maintain, install and monitor the district wide area network (WAN); to establish district standards and methodologies in cabling design and implementations; to ensure contractors and district personnel comply with defined standards; to participate in planning and design of how the district network should grow; to provide support and be a resource to district projects that embrace network solutions; to include research and recommendations that will ensure network performance, efficiencies and standards; to employ and develop global solutions to network requirements; to research, install and maintain network monitoring tools that will track network traffic and performance; to participate in microcomputer integration strategies that are on LAN's or WAN's if there are immediate indications that future district network connectivity is needed.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Monitor and maintain performance of district network and network utilization; concentrate on local area networks that are connected to the district network, with school administrative connections next, and schools that are connected to the district network via WAN technologies or wireless technologies; provide leadership in network protocol selections and implementations; direct involvement with WAN PC integration needs; research and recommend network solutions consistent with district technology goals; maintain all multiplexors, routers and bridges, channel banks, data switches, access points, firewalls, and intrusion detection systems on the district network; perform LAN and WAN server administration and develop, train and install network monitoring tools of Information Services staff; evaluate third party software products; and perform related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of
Principles and practices of state-of-the-art computer networks in a centralized and distributed setting; limitations of currently installed hardware and software; statistical methods and procedures; cabling strategies; multiplexors, bridges, gateways, routers, channel banks, Decnet, TCP/IP, Token Ring, LAT, Appletalk, Novell, Ethernet, data switches, Frame Relay, FDDI, ATM as well as emerging networking technologies such as load balancers, cache devices, packet shapers, fluke meters, VPN’s; recommend network management tools; have working knowledge of Rolm switch and other telephone methodologies; and research network opportunities for transmission of voice, data and video.

Ability to
Analyze and design network systems to maximize district resources and provide adequate networks for growth; make sound judgments related to network usage and system performance; analyze data and draw sound conclusions; train backup personnel for network specialist coverage; participate in installing network software in off-hour settings; prepare clear, complete and concise reports; work independently; maintain and establish cooperative working relationships.

Experience
Five years experience in network management responsibilities; demonstrated success in coordinating large network LAN's and WAN's; proven ability to establish and communicate network decisions in the best interests of protecting current investments; knowledge of industry standard performance tools; and experience and responsibility for products listed above.

Education
Graduation from a four-year accredited college with supplemental course work in network methodologies and performance, further augmented by training in large installation network manager responsibilities through Microsoft and/or Cisco.

Physical Performance Requirements
Considerable standing, walking, or sitting much of the time with some bending, stooping, squatting and twisting. Lifting often involved. Weight of materials will vary, with employees regularly lifting and maneuvering 20 to 30 pounds.

Licenses
Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License, if required.
