The employee in this role will independently monitor and identify performance issues using MSU’s IT scheduling software and multiple monitoring tools; will assume the administrative role in software management. Responsible for monitoring MSU IT datacenter servers, network, and applications using monitoring tools to analyze errors, failures, network malfunctions, data center security, applications, and environmental disruptions. Requires strong analytical skills to diagnose problems, devise viable solutions and follow escalation processes for resolution. Coordinates monitoring software installations, independently works with vendors and staff on upgrades and ensures compliance with all licensing requirements.  Assists in planning; develop and implement new infrastructures, policies, procedures, standards, and practices related to new or updated software along with detailed documentation for all related production activities. Will independently alter complex job streams using scheduling software.  Analyze batch processing abends and follow escalation procedures and resolution processes.  Requires excellent communication skills and collaboration with multiple MSU customers and teams to identify monitoring requirements and reporting metrics. Train co-workers and staff on new or updated procedures.  Use automated scripts and web design.  Measures and records vital statistics and produces reports for multiple areas.  Participates as a fully-functioning professional member of medium/complex project teams and/or independently leads small IT project of 2-3 staff using varied technologies.  Duties associated with this position involve working on a video display terminal 75 percent of the time.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years of college, technical, vocational or business school such as an Associates Degree in computer technology or information systems, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed OR a Bachelors Degree in computer technology or information systems, with coursework in an information technology specialization, experience in System Software support, experience with local area networks, and enterprise monitoring, including being proficient in Windows (all versions); up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Basic knowledge of VMware and MS-SQL; Self-motivated, ambitious, and dedicated team player whose strengths include organizational skills; detail oriented with high level of accuracy and excellent analytical skills.  Strong troubleshooting skills with ability to identify and resolve problems exercising excellent judgment;hardware and software diagnostics.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong documentation skills; ability to work independently and as an effective member of a team and on several projects simultaneously in a deadline-oriented environment.  Experience in installation, configuration and support knowledge of Network Operations Center monitoring tools; experience in at least one scripting language such as Java Script, Powershell, VB Script, etc.; one to two years’ experience in programming languages; Certification in CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network. Working knowledge of Windows/Linux operating system; experience in project management and in the use of project management tools; basic knowledge in keeping software maintenance up-to-date; basic knowledge of data archival and recovery systems; basic knowledge of TCP/IP Networking, etc.; experience with helpdesk ticketing and tracking software.
