General Description:  The Telecommunications Technician is primarily responsible for the installation and maintenance of campus telecommunication infrastructure, UPS systems, VOIP systems and devices, and the campus surveillance system. Additionally, the employee will be expected to cross-train in other positions as determined by I.T. management, to serve as a functional backup when needed.

The employee in this position must have a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and help others. The position requires that the employee have a sense of urgency, perform quality work, and be able to work occasional odd hours and weekends to complete projects and tasks and to respond to emergency calls.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

·         Maintain telephone services, VOIP system, voice mail system, and other features related to phone and voice communications.

·         Install and maintain data cabling across campus while adhering to ANSI/TIA-568/BICSI data cabling standards.

·         Install and maintains data closet infrastructure.

·         Install, configures, and maintains video surveillance cameras across campus.

·         Ensure all users are properly trained in the use of telecommunication devices.

·         Collaborate with Help Desk personnel utilizing Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) software to provide end-user support for all campus users.

·         Work closely with vendors and product support specialists to maintain the currency, quality, and performance of telecommunications systems.

·         Coordinate telecommunication upgrades and projects while working with appropriate information technology and switchboard staff while following appropriate change control procedures, communication protocols, and project standards.

·         Work with cross-functional teams including academics, student services, administration, physical plant, sports, and other campus groups on projects including renovations, construction, lab configurations, wireless internet projects, sports and events. 

·         Create and maintain infrastructure and system documentation.

·         Maintain competency and professional currency through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required or approved by the Information Technology Director.

·         Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

A Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in a computer or technology related field is preferred and a minimum of 2 years’ of work experience in a related field is required.  Cabling and other technical certifications are highly desired and may be considered in lieu of work experience.

The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision.  The employee must have the ability to safely climb and execute work on ladders, and have the ability to safely navigate crawl spaces, tunnels, and heights. Additionally, the employee must have the ability to safely utilize hand and power tools.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  The typical work environment outside of the office consists of working in or around tunnels, crawl spaces, attics, roofs, classrooms, lecture halls, labs, meeting rooms, and a conference center.  Occasionally worked will be performed outdoors.
