The Lower School Innovation & Computer Science Teacher carries two main areas of responsibility:

1) providing direct and/or partnered instruction of GDS’s computer science curriculum to students in PK-5th grades, and

2) working with teachers to develop curriculum in support of technology literacy, STEAM, and technology integration.

 

This position teacher will design lessons, units, projects and classroom activities to convey computer science principles and computational thinking to GDS’s lower school students. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and experience with teaching computer science, information literacy and media production, and will work to share that knowledge with even our youngest students in engaging and meaningful project-based and experiential learning activities.

 

The innovation and computer science teacher will be a strong communicator, a team player, a trusted and learned voice of progressive education, and will appreciate the joys of working in a school serving a diverse student and family population. Most importantly, s/he will have a passion for working with young children and will be driven by the core charge of working to enhance and bring joy to every student’s individual learning experience in equitable and meaningful ways.

 

Principle duties include:

  • Provide direct & partnered computer science instruction to students in grades PK-5; this position will meet with all PK-5 students once per week during a “technology class”
  • Collaborate with teachers to develop their own curricula to include technology literacy skills & capacities
  • Provide in-house professional development for teachers to effectively integrate technology into their practice to enhance the student experience
  • Provide curricular inspiration for teachers whose students are participants in GDS’s 1:1 iPad and Chromebook programs
  • Build networks with students & families to ensure communication about innovative teaching practice are disseminated and understood

 

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • 5 or more years of innovative teaching experience, rich with creativity, technology, and student-centric practice in an elementary or middle school environment
  • Experience teaching computer science/computational thinking to elementary or middle school students
  • Interest & experience in computer science, coding & programming
  • Interest & experience in the “maker arts,” DIY & fabrication
  • Expertise in project & inquiry-based learning
  • Strong written and communication skills
  • An open, energetic and engaging personality
  • A positive, can-do attitude
  • A insatiable need to try new things, reinvent, take risks, evolve, and embody the spirit of innovation
