Summary

 

Do you have a desire to apply your data and analytical skills to help drive good data-driven decision-making at a small university focused on educating and advancing communities of discovery to foster a healthier society? University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis is seeking outstanding candidates for an institutional research analyst position. This position helps develop and maintain data visualization dashboards, extract data from external and internal sources, and promote best research practices. This person's work will directly support self-assessment and continual improvement within almost every department around campus, thereby helping students achieve their academic goals and succeed in life after graduation.This is a full-time, hybrid position; some consideration may be given for fully remote from some states.

 

In this role you will get to:

 

• Help develop and maintain data visualization dashboards for various groups around campus.

• Extract and compile information from both external sources (e.g., from IPEDS, AACP, PharmCAS, College Scorecard, Census Bureau, etc.) and internal sources, noting that some sources require basic knowledge of how to pull data from relational databases using SQL (structured query language).

• Validate information for accuracy and assist with internal and external ad hoc data requests.

• Collaborate with colleagues and brainstorm how best to:

• Follow best practices when starting new data collection processes

• Identify which data collection practices can be automated to improve quality and efficiency

• Use available data to promote student success and help the university function optimally

• Promote data-informed decision-making across campus

 

Qualifications

 

To succeed in this role, you will need:

 

Minimum qualifications:

 

• At least 1 year of experience using data to formally analyze problems and make decisions AND/OR 1 year of experience collecting, storing, and manipulating data.

• Experience with data visualization software (ideally Power BI, but Tableau skills transfer well) or some other experience creating and presenting tables and figures to an audience.

• Experience using some form of programming language; R is highly preferred because that is what Institutional Research currently uses, but many skills transfer well, such as knowledge of Python. Mastery of a programming language is not expected, but the employee should exhibit a degree of comfort and confidence when learning how to use R.

• Strong competency in Excelthe applicant should know how to filter/sort, create custom functions, and use pivot tables.

• Should have at least basic statistical knowledge; for example, the applicant should be able to describe the difference between inferential and descriptive statistics, understand descriptive measures of central tendency and variability, and be willing to learn much more.

Preferred Experience

 

• Experience using survey software (e.g., Surveymonkey), other research-related experience, or computer/data science skills that go beyond what is mentioned in this job description.

• Knowing enough SQL to extract data using select and filter functions, but this could be learned on the job.

• Past experience working in higher education.

• A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., social sciences, data science, statistics, computer science) is preferred. Consideration will be given to applicants without a degree. Applicants will be primarily evaluated on how their past experiences and skills map onto the position’s responsibilities.
