Primary Function of Organizational Unit 

The ECU College of Education prepares more professional educators for North Carolina schools than any other university in the state and is one of only four nationwide recognized for developing “cutting edge programs that will provide powerful examples for others.” East Carolina University, the third largest university in the UNC system, is located in North Carolina’s coastal plain midway between Raleigh and the coast. A rapidly growing institution of nearly 30,000 students, ECU is a research-intensive university which offers more than 104 bachelor’s degree programs, 73 master’s degree programs, 4 intermediate degree programs, 17 doctoral programs, and 2 first professional degree programs (MD, DDS).

Job Duties 

The Office of Assessment, Accreditation, and Data Management in the College of Education is looking to fill part-time, temporary vacancies for Instructional Technology Consultant (also referred to as “Digital Puppeteer”) on an as-needed basis.

The Digital Puppeteer will perform a variety of roles in a new educational interactive learning experience while using the Mursion software. The part-time Puppeteer will be responsible for learning a number of scenarios in education, hospitality, business and medicine and will act as all of the avatars used during a simulation with a live person making connections and working through a specific scene and learning objectives. The Puppeteer will also work to help develop new scenarios for use in the simulator.

Hours will vary to accommodate the needs of university faculty and K-12 schools, but will all fall within the time frame of Monday-Friday 8-7 and Saturday 8-12.

The Digital Puppeteers duties will also include:

—Matching the voices of the current avatars and adapting to new ones.
—Speaking in front of audience for at least 5-15 minutes at a time
—Improvisation with audience to include comedic timing
—Performing various scenarios throughout a 3-8 hour shift
—Utilizing specific 4-D equipment to animate puppets
—Manipulating a digital puppet through repetitive use of the hands, wrists and forearms
—Communicating a pleasant, friendly, and outgoing personality with users and co-workers.

Minimum Education/Experience 

High school diploma and one year of improv experience.

Due to nature of this position, only applicants who have successfully completed the Mursion training are eligible to work with the interactive software.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education 

Preference may be given to applicants with three years of puppeteer experience and/or one or more of the following: an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree; experience with, or a background in, education; experience with, or interest in, gaming technology.
