Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) is an academic unit of the Division of Continuing Studies, reporting to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. It was founded to support the rapidly expanding areas of fully online and hybrid learning at Rutgers. TLT serves faculty and students on all major Learning Management Systems and education technology in use at Rutgers.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Instructional Technology Specialist (ITS) for the Department of Teaching and Learning with Technology. This position reports to Sr. Instructional Technology Specialist at Teaching and Learning with Technology. The Instructional Technology Specialist will be a key team member for delivering education technology to students and faculty at Rutgers University. The ITS will be responsible for the system administration of the Canvas Learning Management System. This includes all 3rd party applications integrated into Canvas.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

• Tests Canvas settings changes to improve usability and meet education needs and objectives of schools, units, and departments. 
• Plans and implements Canvas system upgrades including the evaluation of impact to instruction and learning. 
• Responsible for the management of terms, courses, and enrollments for all courses using data from the Student Information Systems at the University. Responsible for the user accounts with the Rutgers Canvas instance.
• Consults with faculty using problem-solving methodology to analyze, recommend and implement solutions for addressing a wide range of instructional technology needs. 
• Responsible for application of principles and techniques of instructional design for maintenance and support of online instruction. 
• Provides day-to-day support and administrative training for Tier 1 help desk support agents and learning management administrators located throughout the University. 
• Collaborates with instructional design staff to create, organize, and schedule events that will engage faculty in the adoption and use of technology that will create increased teaching and/or learning effectiveness and/or efficiency.
• Works with vendor(s) to identify and resolve site and course level problems in Canvas.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, education, communications or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or work experience, 
• A minimum of two years’ experience in the use of instructional technology to enhance teaching or relevant experience that demonstrates knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating educational programs; training techniques; current technologies; instructional technologies; various hardware and operating systems; networking systems; and various software packages.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Requires good interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. 
• Must have the ability to facilitate and present instructional materials; 
• Assess technology and software programs and identify advantages and limitations of using various technologies for instructional purposes; 
• Effectively demonstrate instructional applications; 
• Effectively communicates technical information to a nontechnical audience; and establish cooperative working relationships

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in the higher education environment
• Professional experience and a strong understanding of the Canvas Learning Management System 
• Professional experience and a strong understanding of education technologies, such as but not limited to Big Blue Button, Kaltura, Turnitin, and Proctortack 
• A strong understanding of Unix, Linux, email & web servers, storage & networking, and relational databases, such as Oracle or MySQL.
• Experience with project and service management
