Position Summary

This position provides leadership, computer technical support and expertise, oversight and management of both the Ag Computing Services Staff and off-campus offices throughout Southern Idaho. Working with staff, faculty and students on and off campus by providing consultation and technical assistance where IT related problems are identified. This position will be responsible for coordinating and assisting with problem resolution by determining their technology needs in services, software, hardware, and networking. This position will provide software training while keeping in budget feasibility in conducting a cost/benefit analysis and planning. This position will provide overall supervision of the IT Operations Unit within the College. This position will require travel throughout assigned region. The employee will work with a wide range of personalities and skill levels. Interpersonal and communication skills are critical in providing consultation and problem resolution as well as continue to maintain and acquire relations with University ITS and outside vendors on the latest software and hardware technologies that will benefit CALS.

Responsibilities

 

Job Duty Function Provide leadership, oversight and management of Ag Computing Service Staff by:
Job Duties/Responsibilities

• Ensuring general college support is provided in an efficient and effective manner, addressing issues.
• Working with staff to solve computer hardware and software problems and providing technical information and support.
• Determining needs, exploring options, specifying and purchasing new computer hardware and software.
• Defining information technology needs, developing strategic and tactical solutions, and implementing solutions using the optimal technology, platform, and interfaces. 
• Working with enterprise management, other technology-oriented staff, and end-user clients to define system requirements for potential uses of information technologies.
• Conducting cost/benefit or feasibility analyses.
• Perform capacity analyses and planning.

Job Duty Function Provide Initial Diagnosis of Computer Problems and Assists with Problem Resolution by:
Job Duties/Responsibilities

• Providing telephone, remote access and on-site technical support for personal computers, traveling throughout Idaho (Southern Region, Dist. 2,3,4) to provide computer installation and problem resolution as required.
• Installing new computers and programs including migrating data files and programs.
• Installing and supporting current and future versions of Windows and CCS-supported software.
• Reformatting computers for new users including reformatting hard drives and reinstalling operating systems.
• Monitoring maintenance agreements, warranties and site licenses.
• Installing and configuring peripherals and network and internet connections.
• Supporting the 4-H software suite-attending support conferences, maintaining and updating the Idaho version, providing expertise and support to county level offices which use the 4-H software.
• Work in partnership with commercial technical support personnel to resolve hardware problems on equipment under warranty.
• Working with end-users to troubleshoot problems utilizing expertise to remotely solve IT related problems and determine if an on-site support visit is required.
• Providing technical expertise for problems not under warranty and for upgrades to existing equipment.
• Documenting problem descriptions, resolutions and work completed on computers in CCSclient database.
• Transporting and moving equipment up to 50 lbs.

Job Duty Function Design and provide training to CALS Faculty, Staff and Customers by:
Job Duties/Responsibilities

• Analyzing and testing software, systems and applications determining those best suited for CALS.
• Developing training modules to increase faculty and staff knowledge of computer topics, including but not limited to computers, peripherals, software, and the internet.
• Coordinating group and individual training on use of integrated hardware and software technologies.
• Developing curriculum with handouts for workshops for beginner, intermediate and advanced level training.
• Developing guidelines, documentation and information for use on CCS web site to educate college clients in current technology trends and CCS services.
• Working with customers to increase knowledge of computer topics, including but not limited to computers, peripherals, software, and the internet.
• Developing curriculum with handouts for workshops for beginner, intermediate and advanced level training.

Job Duty Function Purchase new hardware, software and equipment by:
Job Duties/Responsibilities

• Conferring with customers to define computing needs.
• Researching and determining solutions utilizing optimal technology, platforms and interfaces based on unique and individual situations.
• Researching and purchasing hardware and software to meet a variety of end-user needs following CCS established guidelines.

• Reading computer related publications and assessing possible application uses for the college.
• Researches, implements, and supports multiple computing platforms, operating systems, processing environments, and telecommunications technologies.
• Researches available tools and technologies to determine alternate technology solutions.
• Attending conferences, workshops and seminars to maintain expertise and knowledge.
• Experimenting with new hardware and software to help determine possible application and use within the college.

Position Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications

Six (6) years experience with IT related duties.

Management in a technical environment.

Proven work experience supporting technology.

Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups.

Good supervisory experience.

Ability to: communicate effectively in writing and verbally.

A high level of integrity consistent with broad access to personal and confidential information on personal computers and network resources. Good judgment to access only the information required to carry out the duties of this position.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field.

Experience with Java, Javascript, Perl, and DHTML.

Good knowledge of Windows 8 and prior; MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, FrontPage, PowerPoint), 4-H Plus enrollment software; knowledge of HP printers.

Experience with MS Access or other database applications.

Experience with client/server applications and remote desktop support.

Experience with telephone technical support.

Experience with Macintosh hardware and software.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

Ability to lift, move and carry equipment up to 50 lbs; climb stairs, and maneuver in tight places.

May work around standard office conditions. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Use of manual dexterity.
