Job Summary

The job of the product manager is “to manage the lifecycle of a product to maximize its value, usefulness and feasibility.” Product management is the intersection between business, technology and user experience. A good product manager must be experienced in at least one, passionate about all three, and conversant with practitioners in all. IT product managers set the vision for UIT’s growing family of products and are responsible for guiding multidisciplinary teams towards a common goal: providing high-quality products and features on time and at a feasible cost. As advocates for both our users and the University, IT product managers balance diverse perspectives and represent the voice of the customer in product development.

Business – Product management is above all else a business function, focused on maximizing business value from a product. The ideal IT product manager should be obsessed with optimizing a product to achieve the business goals while maintaining cost effectiveness.

Technology – This position is responsible for infrastructure products (storage, virtual machines, wired and wireless network access, web hosting, data center co-location, cable and fiber services, and workplace support). The IT product manager should understand the effort and technical concepts required to build and deliver infrastructure products. Product managers should also be aware of upcoming disruptive technologies and vendor roadmaps.

User Experience – The IT product manager is the voice of the user and must be passionate about the user experience. IT product managers learn the user’s voice by using and testing the product, and by continuously talking to users and getting feedback first hand.
