The Office of Teaching, Learning & Technology (OTLT) , a campus-wide provider of professional development services for University of Iowa instructors (faculty, lecturers, and teaching assistants), is seeking to fill a full-time Instructional Technology Consultant.
This position will function under the Director of the OTLT Enterprise Instructional Technology group. Duties include working in collaboration with other OTLT staff members supporting enterprise instructional technologies such as learning management systems (LMS), electronic portfolios, student response systems, wiki, lecture capture, digital media solutions, web conferencing and other large-scale instructional technology implementations. The position includes leading and managing projects and services. Ideal candidates will have a background in academic technologies (e.g. Course management systems, clickers, digital media creation software). This position involves providing consultation services to faculty and teaching assistants, training and support to advance classroom instruction with technology, and learning tools. This is NOT strictly an IT desktop support position.

This position is not eligible for H-1b visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Perform support and service management for educational technologies including learning management system, lecture capture, student response systems, plagiarism detection, electronic portfolios, placement exams, faculty evaluations, exam scoring, peer-review for writing, digital media solutions, wiki, and other tools.

  • Work on cross-functional, cross-departmental teams to ensure efficiencies with software deployment and implementation.

  • Independently test new software and hardware versions and configurations. Provide feedback regarding compatibility, performance, and effectiveness and strategy for upgrading to new versions.

  • Provide broad and advanced support to a variety of complex hardware and software issues as assigned. Investigate and evaluate complex hardware and software issues. Some 24x7 on-call support is required.

  • Evaluate and recommend strategic software and hardware solutions for enterprise instructional tools. 

  • Create and provide basic and complex training to small and large groups of constituents. Provide training to peer faculty and staff. 

Education Requirement:
Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline or an equivalent combination of education and related experience in instructional support may also serve to meet these minimum requirements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience, (typically 1-3 years) providing instructional and technical support in an information technology environment.

  • Experience supporting educational technology

  • Experience working on cross-functional teams

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; the ability to explain computing concepts to non-technical staff

  • Ability to troubleshoot issues pertaining to the use of instructional technology

  • A proven track-record of initiating, managing, and completing technology projects

  • Experience creating and presenting training sessions for instructional technology applications within one-on-one, small group and large scale training sessions

  • Proven record of technical curiosity and problem-solving skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite

  • Criminal background check and credential check will be required for finalist.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting technology in a higher educational setting

  • Experience leading instructional technology projects 

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies

  • Knowledge of current trends and issues impacting academic technology in higher education

  • Experience with course management systems (such as Desire2Learn, Canvas, Moodle, Sakai, Blackboard, etc.)

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (or equivalent web, photo and image editing software)

  • Experience evaluating new and emerging technologies and their potential applications specific to teaching and learning

  • Master’s degree in Instructional Technology, Computer Science, Library Science or other related degrees in instructional support 

  • Experience researching, evaluating and piloting new and emerging instructional technologies
