Working with the Director of Technology and the Technical Support Specialist, the Network Administrator will manage all academic and administrative technology systems and support the integration of technology at all levels. The Network Administrator will also be responsible for maintenance and support of all network infrastructure, both wired and wireless, as well as maintenance and support of a Cisco VOIP phone system.

The Ethel Walker School is a grade 6-12 boarding school and as such the network has unique demands placed upon it, including, but not limited to, a very high availability of service with very few maintenance windows during the school year. Late night and/or weekend work may be required to perform needed maintenance of network and server systems.

The Network Administrator will report directly to the Director of Technology.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain the following:
    • Network Servers: Windows Server 2003 & Server 2008, Mac OS X Servers
    • Network Systems: Senior Systems/Oracle, Active Directory (LDAP), Promise SAN, Aruba Wireless, Spiceworks
    • Phone System: Cisco VOIP Call Manager, Cisco Unity Voicemail, Cisco Emergency Responder & Singlewire Informacast
    • Network Core & Edge Switching: One Cisco Catalyst 3560X & many HP Procurve switches
    • Network Security: Palo Alto Firewall, Cisco PIX Firewall, Bradford Network Sentry (NAC)
    • Remote Access: Citrix, Windows Remote Desktop, ARD, Cisco IPSEC VPN
    • Network Clients: Mac OS X, IOS, Android, Some Windows, Some Linux
    • Networking Related Protocols: TCP/IP, Bonjour, POE, LDAP, SCCP, AFP, SMB, LLDP
    • Multiple ISP Connections: Comcast fiber connection (100mb) and cable connection (50mb)
    • Cloud Services: Google Apps For Education, Veracross SIS/Admissions, OpenDNS
    • Network Printers: HP, Konica/Minolta, Xerox and Canon copiers
    • Wireless Phones: iPhones, Android phones, and Verizon PTT phones
  • Manage and support the school's network systems for students, faculty & staff use
  • Configure & install new hardware including but not limited to networking equipment and network cabling
  • Oversee fiber-optic backbone maintenance and expansion
  • Manage, monitor, and maintain network UPS battery backup units at each switch location
  • Plan & perform upgrades and/or repairs of existing desktop, laptop, server, and network hardware
  • Deploy OS X system images using Deploystudio and netboot
  • Support Windows virtual machines running in Parallels, Virtuozzo, and Virtualbox environments
  • Keep all constituents informed of any planned outages or service interruptions
  • Maintain an inventory of hardware and software
  • Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on network, phone, and computer systems
  • Respond to trouble tickets assigned by the Help Desk
  • Maintain expertise in computer and networking technology and provide suggestions for improvement or advancement of the school’s systems
  • Provide any assistance pertaining to any technology questions, including those that are not directly related to computers, networking, or phone systems.
  • Work with the Director of Technology on maintaining and improving the school's intranet and Internet
  • Work with the Director of Technology to generate and manage the Technology Department Budget
  • Work with the Director of Technology to advance the school’s Strategic Technology Plan
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Technology
  • In addition to network administration, responsibilities may include teaching technology course(s) depending on the interests and abilities of the individual.

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Microsoft & Apple Server Operating Systems
  • Knowledge of IPSEC VPN implementations
  • Ability to troubleshoot network and operating system issues.
  • Knowledge of wireless systems management. Aruba experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of VOIP phone systems. Cisco experience a plus.
  • Ability to install and maintain network cabling and equipment (switches, routers, wireless, etc.)
  • Ability to design, configure and maintain an enterprise scalable LAN
    • Knowledge of enterprise firewalls (Palo Alto & Cisco ASA/PIX)
    • Knowledge of Cisco and HP Procurve switches and routers
    • Knowledge of and experience with VLANs
