Position Overview

 

Responsible for the telecommunications infrastructure of Boise State University; to include all Boise State buildings, all campus sites and all cross-connect sites. Responsible for the quality and reliability of telecommunications of Boise State University; to include offering a voice, video and data telecommunications infrastructure that is reliable and available with 99.999% uptime.
 
Responsible for the configuration, maintenance, integration and deployment of an enterprise data switching backbone for the Office of Information Technology including but not limited to: Liaison between the Office of Information Technology and low voltage service contract vendor, network design, wireless communications, Phone communications, system design and automated system monitoring
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Serve as OIT’s Low voltage service vendor Liaison. 
    Daily scheduling of Telecommunications wiring. 
    On site representative for Vendor’s working on campus. 
    Research and recommend Future wiring needs. 
    Maintain Low Voltage consumables inventory. 
    Bid wire job requests for customers and projects.
    2. Serve as OIT’s LAN Engineer. 
    Daily maintenance and problem resolution. 
    Planning and execution of LAN maintenance. 
    Research and recommend Future LAN needs. 
    Maintain Disaster recovery documentation of LAN. 
    3. Serve as OIT’s Optical and Copper backbone Engineer. 
    Daily maintenance and problem resolution. 
    Planning and execution of backbone maintenance. 
    Research and recommend Future backbone needs. 
    Perform Low Voltage Locates for Dig Line requests. 
    Maintain Disaster Recovery documentation of backbone architecture. 
    4. Customer service. 
    Manage assigned work queue for customer needs.
    Assist customers with planning their future needs.
    5. On call and after hours support.  
    This position requires on call and after hours support for maintenance and Service down scenarios 
    6. Other duties as assigned. 

     

     

    Qualifications

     Minimum Qualification (Including Certificates and Licenses)

     
    Bachelor's degree or equivalent plus 2 years experience.
     
    1. Knowledge of the design, analysis, optimization and operation of LAN and Wireless services.
    2. Skilled in interpersonal relationships, teaching, planning and communication.
    3. Definitive knowledge of all forms of Copper wiring and fiber for telecommunications.
    4. Ability to use VLF to troubleshoot/extend fiber paths.
    5. Ability to troubleshoot all copper media for telecommunication patch panels and outlets.
    6. Knowledge of all seven layers of the OSI model.
    7. Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, communications, and public relations skills.
     
    Requires use/knowledge of Cisco (Switches and wireless products), Bind DNS/DHCP services, Linux operating systems, Cable Testing equipment and End user Operating Systems knowledge.
     
    Expected to achieve CCNA within one year of start date.
     

      Preferred Qualifications

        Bachelor's degree with 1 year of network and communication experience.
