We are seeking an experienced Network Specialist to provide network support to residential units on campus. The Network Specialist is a member of the Student Technology team and will report to the Associate Director, Student Technology.
 

The ideal candidate has knowledge of enterprise level networking, is enthusiastic about providing tier 2 support to over 100+ student workers and the greater Stanford community in a dynamic environment, and has excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical users.

 

JOB PURPOSE:

Under general supervision, provide network design and hardware and software support to users in the computing community. Support the network environments of computer technologies, including voice, data, and/or video/image technologies. 

 

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Monitor and report on network utilization, and initiate action in cases where capacity or service levels require adjustments.

  • Respond to trouble calls; diagnose and develop solutions/repair.

  • Prepare network documentation.

  • Respond to network requests.

  • Maintain the security of the network infrastructure.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and two or more years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Experience with Cisco networking equipment.

  • Experience working in a higher education setting.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with ability to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical users.

  • Knowledge of TCP/IP protocol.

  • Basic IT and network technology knowledge.

  • Ability to use discretion and judgment.

 

Certifications and Licenses:

None
 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.  

  • Frequently sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.  

  • Occasionally stand/walk, kneel/crawl, and use a telephone.  

  • Rarely climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to or or>40 pounds.  

  • Must be able to occasionally crawl into tight spaces.  

  • Requires good visual acuity

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May require flexible hours and weekends, on-call rotation.

  • May be exposed to electricity at greater than 240 volts, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA.  

  • May need to work in confined spaces such as closets and racks or heights 4-10 feet.
