Job Summary

This position is posted at a PAE4IT level but may be filled at a PAE3IT level depending on the candidate’s qualifications. Although they will be similar, the duties and responsibilities may differ if filled at the lower rank. Please see the Requirements Section below for the qualifications listed for each level.

Works independently to provide highly specialized technical expertise in the architecture, installation and operational support of major GlobalNOC networking systems comprised of local, nationwide and international networks, software and services including but not limited OSHEAN, KINBER and various other Regional Education Networks. Responsible for the evaluation and implementation of systems, operational controls and service delivery management of networking systems with regard to complex topologies, advanced IP routing issues, optical troubleshooting, performance and reliability goals. This includes overall deployment, logistics, hardware and software components deployed locally, regionally and nationally.

Serve as project manager leading systems and network engineers in the deployment, logistics, hardware and software for GlobalNOC networking environments. Direct project team meetings to address technical issues. Responsible for the timeline, tracking of processes and technical review of work created by other engineers including preparation of a variety of reports denoting statistical summaries of time and activities.

Perform detail networking traffic analysis and usage studies, and propose design changes to ensure that network performance and reliability meet expectations. Serve as senior point of escalation to troubleshoot networks and networking technology. Coordinate and oversee necessary hardware and software upgrades. Ensure client and network systems operation documentation is accurate and up to date.

Provide input, expertise and consulting to management regarding strategies and goals for delivery of applications via IU-managed networks. Serve as a resource to networking support staff at the University; act as liaison between the university, other institutions utilizing current technology standards. Consult with equipment suppliers and external service providers to ensure the department stays on the cutting edge of technology.

Required Qualifications PAE4IT Requirements: REQUIRED: Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, networking, engineering, or related field, plus 5 years of experience with advanced network management and operations, performance monitoring and security.

Combinations of related education and experience will be considered.

Broad experience with issues related to deployment of large, nationwide networking and network measurement infrastructures, including experience with high amperage DC power installations and central office co-location requirements. Experience with Ciena, Cisco IOS, and Juniper’s JunOS. Experience with Ciena Site Manager, Ciena One Control and Cisco CTM software.

In depth knowledge of the TCP/IP protocol suite, specifically relating to routing of IP packets (ISIS, OSPF, MSDP, BGP, PIM). Knowledgeable of UNIX operating systems. Be able to think creatively and to speak and write clearly and effectively, particularly been able to communicate technical ideas and concepts to peers and customers. Able to work effectively in a multitasking environment.

PAE3IT Requirements: REQUIRED: Bachelor’s Degree in telecommunications, IT, or related field, plus 3 years work experience in the areas of design, integration, installation, configuration and maintenance of data networks that includes experience with several link-layer protocols (Ethernet, SONET, etc.).

Knowledge of several link-layer protocols (Ethernet, SONET, etc.). A broad knowledge of networking protocols, specifically relating to routing of packets (OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, PIM, MSDP, and MPLS). Working knowledge of other Internet services and applications within the IP suite (TELNET, FTP, NNTP, DNS, SMTP, HTTP, etc.). Able to handle multiple priorities and constantly changing demands and work effectively in a multitasking environment.

Preferred Qualifications

An advanced degree in computer science, mathematics, the sciences, engineering or other related technical fields.

PAE4IT:

Working knowledge of other Internet services and applications within the IP suite (SSH, FTP, DNS, SMTP, HTTP, etc.).

PAE3IT:

Experience with Cisco and/or Juniper routers and switches; experience with optical technologies especially WDM and DWDM, programming in Perl or C, and basic UNIXsystem administration; skill with the installation and maintenance of networking or other computer hardware; ability to work with large scale projects and roll-outs helpful; interpersonal skills, technical writing and communications, and understanding of the network standards and protocols.
