The Athenian School is seeking a FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) computer programming mentor with expertise in teaching computer science across middle and upper school grades.  The ideal candidate for this part-time faculty position will have two years of experience as the main mentor of a successful FRC robotics team of 20 students or more.  This position requires a thorough understanding of FRC electronics and programming and is not for the faint of heart, as it will involve approximately 400 hours of student contact time after school, on the weekends, and during the two competitions that take place in late March and early April.  You will be working with the mechanical engineering FRC mentor who will also have the administrative and logistical responsibilities associated with running a FIRST team.  Note: For a strong candidate who does not have the FRC robotics experience, we are willing to accept and train the person during an initial probationary year. This is a unique opportunity for a computer programming professional who is looking to enter the teaching profession.
General Responsibilities:
  • Mentor the programming component of an FRC robotics team
  • Create hands-on, inquiry and project-based learning experiences
  • Collaborate effectively with students, parents, teachers, and administrators
Core Qualifications:
  • University degree, ideally in a combination of computer science and education
  • Two years minimum of FRC mentoring or relevant teaching experience within the FRC framework
  • Experience with systems involving hardware, software, and mechanical components
  • Successful teaching experience in primary, secondary school, university, and/or formal programs outside of school
  • Strong hands-on programming and teaching skills using languages such as C, C++, Objective C, Java, Labview, API development, Robot C,  Lua, Python
  • Familiarity with Linux, Arduino, Raspberry Pi
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Aptitude for innovative curriculum and program development
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
At least 2 years teaching experience at the middle or high school level, master's degree and/or teaching credential is preferred.
