Duties & Responsibilities

HBX, the digital education initiative of Harvard Business School, is looking for a highly-skilled engineer to provide technical leadership and support of our extensive AWS-based infrastructure portfolio. Reporting to the Director of Systems Engineering and Operations, the position will provide planning, coordination, and support for the operation and maintenance of infrastructure underpinning our innovative “born in the cloud” course platform. This position will have an integral role in defining and implementing further enhancements and automation, driving innovative approaches to platform architecture, and ensuring continued leadership in cloud adoption and operations practices.
 

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Implement and leverage technologies, tools, and processes— with a focus on automation and DevOps approaches— to continually optimize the reliability, availability, and performance of HBX Platforms and Systems running in Amazon Web Services

• Provide technical leadership for a strong team of DevOps Engineers

• Work closely with HBX business, software development, and user experience teams to ensure platform services address the needs of stakeholders

• Work closely with senior technical leadership team to develop and implement architecture strategy for platforms and systems

• Direct ongoing technical engagement with AWS Enterprise Support staff and other vendors to maximize utilization of external resources

• Advise the Director of Systems Engineering and Operations on opportunities to further develop a high-performing DevOps function

• Ensure strong engineering and operations practices are adhered to, including documentation of processes and procedures; systems monitoring, metrics collection, and alerting; incident response, analysis, and problem management; capacity and cost management and forecasting; system patching and vulnerability management; and compliance and IT security hardening and incident response practices

• Participate in 24x7 on-call technical support rotations

 

Basic Qualifications

• 7+ years of infrastructure management experience 

• Experience as a technical team leader

 

Additional Qualifications

• Diverse technical skillset including server/network/storage administration, Linux/apache/nginx, AWS core services (EC2, S3, VPC, ECS), databases (RDS, MySQL, MongoDB), and infrastructure programming/automation (CloudFormation, python/boto, and Ansible)

• Experience implementing modern Infrastructure architectural approaches such as containers, microservices, and serverless applications

• Experience implementing continuous integration/delivery pipelines, extensive knowledge of SDLC practices, and supporting agile/scrum software development teams

• Expertise utilizing diverse toolsets to maintain and optimize services (Splunk, New Relic, DataDog, OpsGenie, and CloudWatch)

• Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to influence others

Candidates with fewer years of experience may be considered for hire at Grade 58.
