Job Description

Overview:

Reporting to the Director of the Instructional Technology & Design Services (ITDS) unit within the Information Technology Division, the Senior Technology Trainer is responsible for the planning and logistical execution of all facets of the unit’s training and faculty professional development activities. In this, the incumbent makes sound recommendations of emerging and innovative technology training agenda to the Director, plans for and designs faculty development activities across various teaching and learning perspectives, and develop schedule and associated personnel assignments to support the overall instructional curriculum. In support of the ITDS unit’s mission, the incumbent provides the necessary documentation and instructional services required to ensure members of the Campus Community are able to effectively integrate appropriate and enabling technologies into the business operations, administrative functions and the academic activities of the operating units that comprise the University. Working in a team with other ITDS staff members, the Senior Technology Trainer provides timely and effective support services for online teaching and learning.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Promote the effective use of information technology resources to the entire Montclair State University community through training activities that meet or exceed the expectations of our faculty and staff

  • Play a leading role in providing training and support services to the campus community on use of the Canvas Learning Management System

  • Work collaboratively with ITDS colleagues to provide user support and training for the University’s learning management systems.

  • Lead and coordinate the testing efforts for any Canvas releases and validate their functionalities

  • Serve as the liaison with the Instructure Canvas vendor to resolve end-user issues or challenges pertaining to the Canvas LMS.

  • Work as a team player with other ITDS staff members to support online teaching and provide course design assistance to instructional designers as needed.

  • Prepare, for the Director’s approval, the faculty development activities such as Annual Summer Institute, Winter Tech Camp, Best-practice Workshops for Summer/Winter Session Faculty, Faculty-led Workshops/Forums, etc.

  • Initiate, for the Director’s approval, innovative technology training agenda for the Instructional Technology & Design Services unit

  • Lead and coordinate the training and user support for the University-wide Accessibility Initiative, especially on how to create accessible instructional materials.

  • Work as the main trainer on applications such as Qualtrics, Banner navigation, 

  • Assist the Director to update online technology training curriculum to meet the needs of the campus community.

  • Collect training feedback and lead to adjust and implement both academic and administrative training agenda based on training feedback

  • Prepare training materials and documentations to provide instruction in the use of the University’s administrative (business) applications

  • Communicate technical information to faculty, staff and students in non-technical, clear manner.

  • Conduct audience analysis in order to design user-friendly training materials and tutorials in a format that can best serve and achieve training goals.

  • Ensure training quality and continuous improvement via survey, interview or participant evaluation

  • Design and update instructional delivery in various formats including classroom instruction, online delivery, on-on-one tutoring, self-help modules to support the community of users and to ensure all members of the community are able to extract maximum value from the technology investments made.

  • Develop mastery of new technology applications and solutions that are adopted by operating units throughout the University to ensure ongoing support.

  • Proactively reach out to user community (faculty and staff) to gather information about technology input and training needs

  • Monitors changes and revisions to technology applications and solutions that are used by the University’s academic and administrative units and arranges for appropriate training.

  • Create and maintains documentation pertinent to the technology applications and solutions in use at the University, thereby ensuring the community of users remains current in the most productive use of these applications and extracts maximum value from the resources invested.

  • Research the emerging teaching and learning technologies and makes sound recommendations to the Director regarding the complement of tools and technologies that should be supported or decommissioned.

  • Provides technology user support in a timely manner via phone, email, 1-on-1 consultations, private group meetings, etc.

 

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution. Equivalent combinations of related experience and/or education may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor’s Degree.

  • A minimum of two years of experience performing the duties and responsibilities as described above.

  • Knowledge of online course design strategy and methodologies.

  • Proven experience in the LMS, user support and technology training

  • Experience designing user-friendly technology tutorials in various format. 

  • Strong presentation skills accompanied by a polished and professional style

  • Proven experience and effectiveness working with faculty and staff who need assistance with technologies, including patience with non-technical individuals and a commitment to the highest level of customer service.

  • High-profiled organizational skills and project implementation capabilities

  • Ability to utilize effective instructional strategies in a technology training setting.

  • Excellent technology problem-solving skills.

  • Highly proficient at MS Office Suite, Canvas, Panopto, Qualtrics, Adobe and web design technologies.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
