Job Summary: 

St. George’s School seeks a dynamic and collaborative educator to serve as the Department Chair for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education beginning in the summer of  2022. The successful candidate will seek to promote innovation within an integrated STEM curriculum giving appropriate consideration to specific disciplinary knowledge as needed. As both a teacher and an academic leader, the department chair works collaboratively within their own department, as well as with other department chairs, in support of the student experience. We seek dynamic candidates who will energetically participate broadly in the life of the school.  Candidates must possess the skills and expertise to help advance the school’s diversity, equity and inclusion strategic plan.

Responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of trends and best practices pertaining to STEM education and pedagogy;

  • Envision and work to implement a clear scope and sequence in STEM curriculum, one that is research-based,  developmentally appropriate, innovative, and aligned with the school’s mission;

  • Serve as a member of the school’s Academic Council to coordinate and cultivate the school-wide curriculum and evaluate the overall academic program in relationship to our mission;

  • Chair regular department meetings to discuss programmatic efforts and offer support to teachers within the department; 

  • Oversee the safe and efficient functioning of academic spaces and programming related to the Academic Building; 

  • Support the personal growth and professional development of teachers in the department, via the St. George’s School Professional Teaching Standards and Faculty Growth Cycle;

  • In collaboration with the Dean of Teaching and Learning and the Associate Head for Faculty, support the recruitment and hiring process of  teachers in STEM subject areas;

  • Manage the department budget and oversee the ordering of lab and classroom supplies

  • Teach two courses through the academic year; participate in one season of the afternoon curriculum and serve as a dorm parent/supervise the campus during the  evenings and on weekends; 

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School or Associate Head for Faculty;

  • Support the School and its leadership.

Skills and qualifications:

  • Passion to work with teenagers in a complex and demanding academic environment; 

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and serving students and teachers from all backgrounds and traditions;

  • Strong interpersonal, facilitation, and communication skills;

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required; a Master’s degree is preferred. 

  • Candidates should have significant teaching and leadership experience.
